Hello,

I have several hundred old bricks from barn and house demolitions that we would like to use this summer to build a chicken coop. For the openings for doors and windows, I would prefer not to use concrete lintels because, in my opinion, they don’t fit well aesthetically.

Could you tell me what would be the best type of lintel to use that also roughly matches the period of the old bricks? In our house, we replaced many wooden lintels with concrete ones during renovation, but these are no longer visible. However, I’m not sure if wood is a good option for a construction that will remain unplastered.

Maybe you have some experience or ideas and could help me out.

Thank you very much and best regards

Use concrete and place a wooden privacy screen in front of it.

Hello,

thank you very much for your suggestions. Simply covering or cladding the concrete lintel is indeed a good idea. This way, I retain the full load-bearing capacity of the concrete lintel while improving its appearance.

Best regards

I think exposed concrete lintels also go well with brickwork.

There are also brick lintels. If you want to do it perfectly, build a form and create rounded arches, just like in the old days. That will, of course, make the rest more expensive. You will surely find old brick facades somewhere where this can be seen. Image searches in a search engine can also be helpful.
