ᐅ Opening a Fireplace During Renovation: How to Approach It?

Hello everyone,

Quick question. We are currently renovating the house.

I want to reopen my old, unused fireplace, but the usual keys don’t work.

In the photo, you can see a square-shaped "opening," but behind it is just a "metal plate." The chimney sweep said on the phone to simply use a Phillips screwdriver, but that was pointless.

Remove the wallpaper or whatever that is. There must be something behind it that can be turned. Should the door remain undamaged?

If this is a rectangle, use a suitable large screwdriver and turn it to the right. Spray with WD-40 beforehand and let it soak. It might also help to gently tap the lock with a small hammer at the same time.

Drill hole in concrete shell with rough surface and dark hole.


The chimney sweep will surely have the right key. Search online for:
SECOTEC key for stove door, inspection door | 7x7 mm (0.28x0.28 inch) square key | 1 piece
