ᐅ Open roof structure or ceiling?

Hello,

we are currently planning to build a single-family house with two full stories. Wall heights up to 6 meters (20 feet) and a ridge height up to 9 meters (30 feet) are allowed according to the development plan. On the ground floor, we want a ceiling height of 2.7–3 meters (9–10 feet), and upstairs approximately 2–2.5 meters (6.5–8 feet).

We are still considering whether to have a ceiling on the upper floor or not (open roof truss, 25° gable roof, allowing for very high interior spaces).

The open roof truss will probably cost about €15,000–20,000 more but offers spacious rooms, natural light through electric roof windows, and possibly the option to add a gallery later. With a ceiling, spotlights are easier to install, it costs less, and the roof truss could be used as additional storage (since there is no basement, but plenty of storage/living space, garage, garden shed, etc.), although it would probably just become a dumping area...

What do you think? Which option makes more sense?

And how are the ceilings supposed to be installed over the children's rooms and the bathroom??? I honestly can't imagine how this is supposed to be done.
What exactly do you mean? 🙂
The walls will just be built higher accordingly.

Sorry for the link, it can be deleted, it’s just a Pinterest image.

Don’t tell us, tell the admin.

Upstairs, of course, we don’t have just one room, but two kids’ bedrooms, an office, a children’s bathroom, and a master bedroom with walk-in closet and bathroom.

If we built it open-plan, we would probably have a ceiling height of 3.5–4 meters (11.5–13 feet) in the middle upstairs. We don’t need to use the full 9 meters (30 feet) and therefore probably 5 meters (16.5 feet) height at the top.

That really depends on how wide the house will be and how the rooms are arranged in relation to the corridor. Do you have only one roof slope or a narrow gable?
It can all look good, but if the room layout doesn’t work, it can quickly feel awkward.
Otherwise, I’m in favor of open-plan – it creates a wonderful sense of space. We have our living room open to the roof, and the roof pitch there is almost too steep.

The house measures approximately 18x11.5 meters (59x38 feet) on the ground floor, with two bay windows that become part of the roof terrace upstairs. So, the roof area at the top is about 10x10 meters (33x33 feet).

I’m attaching a picture to help visualize it better. It’s still in the design phase, so no worries. 🙂

We are leaning towards a more open attic space. It will be a standard roof without gables, but with a slight overhang at the staircase.

Grundriss Obergeschoss: Flur, Eltern-Schlafzimmer, Kind 1, Kind 2, Büro, Bad.

Which way does the roof go?

West to east. North is at the top of the sketch.

To me, this would look far too much like a makeshift attic apartment with the many rooms. You won’t really see the roof structure anywhere, just sections of beams and sloped ceilings – which will create a boxed-in feeling in the smaller rooms.
