Dear forum members,
I am planning to build a single-family house and would like to have a masonry fireplace installed.
The fireplace will be placed between the living and dining areas. The chimney location is already fixed. The fireplace will be positioned next to the chimney and, depending on whether it is single-sided or double-sided, it will extend further into the room (see pictures).
I am generally okay with a single-sided fireplace, but I am unsure if I would have a good angled view of the glass from the sofa. That’s why I am considering an L-shaped fireplace, which allows a good angled view. This would almost act like a room divider, as it will probably extend about 80cm (31 inches) into the room.
What do you think about these ideas, or what would look better in your opinion?
Thanks!

The sketch is not to scale, I don’t remember the exact measurement, but it’s probably around 80 cm (31 inches)? Yes, it’s a small room divider.
Well, if you want to sit on the bench by the heated fireplace, there’s hardly any other practical position. ;-)
We consulted a fireplace specialist. Hark and similar companies would have installed it oriented this way for an extra charge, but I don’t understand why the bench is usually positioned facing the fireplace window as a standard.
Thanks to a power outlet next to the bench, I also sit there regularly in summer (with my phone plugged in *g*).
It takes longer to feel the warmth on your back in winter, which I also like, compared to traditional tiled stoves—maybe we just don’t stoke the fire strongly enough.Thank you! Did you extend the fireplace all the way to the ceiling, or is there still some space above?Yes, when the fireplace is heated, you probably won’t sit on the bench, but it’s often arranged that way.

A properly sized chimney works very well even in a low-energy house. However, there is no clear basis to determine the correct sizing here: the living room would currently be the only reference point, but if I remember correctly, the original poster also plans to add a conservatory in the future – although without any decision yet on if, when, or where :-(

Yes, when the fireplace is lit, you probably wouldn’t sit on the bench, but it’s often set up that way.If done correctly, you can also sit there while the fireplace is burning.

You can’t really determine the correct dimensions from anything here: at the moment, the living room is the only basis for evaluation, but if I remember correctly, the OP also plans to add a conservatory in the future—although there’s still no decision on if, when, or where it will be located :-( Let’s leave the conservatory out for now... the living room has to serve as the evaluation basis for the time being... it is 44 m² (474 sq ft) in size by the way :-)

Edit: In the installation situation from the original poster, would the bench require a custom build because of the corner in the wall?
