Dear everyone,

I am at my wit’s end. I need to install vinyl flooring in a retail space, but there is only a 2mm (0.08 inch) gap under the door, and I need 8mm (0.3 inch). Is it possible to adjust the height of these old doors? What are the screws on the hinges for?

Thank you very much for any advice.
Door with metal grille, view outdoors to the street; shelf and objects on the right.

Close-up of a white metal arm with a screw hole, with a black cable running through it.

Rusty door bolt with round head and slot; mounted on a dark door frame, background construction scaffold.

Do you currently have a 6mm (1/4 inch) gap at the top to the frame? If not, adjusting everything won’t help. Plane down the bottom by 6mm (1/4 inch) or saw it off, depending on the material.

Yes, there are still about 10 mm (0.4 inches) at the top. So there is enough space upwards.

Then try removing the door, placing washers at the desired height on the hinges, and rehanging it. Alternatively, just cut it shorter.

The question is, how? This is not a regular front door. Do I need to unscrew the screws, or can I simply lift it up?

Just give it a try; those three pictures don’t make us any wiser than you.
I suspect that it can’t be simply pushed up, otherwise anyone with a chisel could get into the store (?). So first, remove the hinges. A flathead screwdriver would be my first tool to try.
