Hello,
we have found a very interesting plot of land in principle – however, when I look on maps, I see what appears to be an oil facility or something similar and a power station "nearby." There is still forest and a highway in between, but could this have any negative effects regarding odors, health, potential accidents, or something like that?
What do you think? Any concerns?

Henrik08171238 Jul 2016 08:53Does that mean you hear a Western highway more than an Eastern one? Why is that? Well, it's clear that I’m driving past it anyway – but I could avoid it if there was a clear reason, such as a bad smell or other disadvantages related to the oil field...
Thanks to everyone anyway.

We have a ventilation unit on the east side, which is 95% inaudible. In the rare cases of east wind, it can be heard.
I didn't really want it the other way around.

Northeast of us, about 2.5 km (1.6 miles) away in a straight line, there is a lightly used highway.
In the evening and at night, you can hear it as a very faint noise even with a southwest wind. With a north or east wind, it is clearly audible.
I cannot assess how much the construction in your case will reduce this noise.

I could skip that if it were clear for a certain reason that there is a bad smell or other disadvantages because of the oil refinery area...The refinery and the power plant most likely have no immediate impact on the property in terms of contamination or similar issues. They are too far away for that. It should not be forgotten that more or less the entire Ruhr area can be problematic; heavy metals and similar contaminants occur more frequently there. We don’t know the history of the specific location mentioned (regardless of the power plant/refinery).You will probably see the columns and towers. To what extent that bothers you is something only you can decide. And whether it is realistically possible to build without an industrial view is also only for you to know (not everyone can build by the coast or at Lake Tegernsee).

Usually the wind comes from the west -> windward sideAnd since that is the case, the better neighborhoods used to be located west of industrial areas. Today, the air is much cleaner than it was in the 1980s (or 1960s or even 1890), but in the event of an incident, things could (!) go wrong. Realistically, I would worry less about this here in Central Europe. The safety standards at such facilities are already quite high. But who knows what the coming decades will bring? Now, all that remains is an on-site visit! Take your time, walk around the area on different weekdays and at different times, under various weather conditions.

Which picture?Henrik had posted a map excerpt from Google. This was removed by Yvonne due to Google's rights to the map data. To keep the thread alive, I at least shared the information from it, so everyone can form their own opinion. Unfortunately, no new map excerpt from freely usable map material has been posted.
