ᐅ Oil refinery and power plant nearby

Hello,

we have found a very interesting plot of land in principle – however, when I look on maps, I see what appears to be an oil facility or something similar and a power station "nearby." There is still forest and a highway in between, but could this have any negative effects regarding odors, health, potential accidents, or something like that?

What do you think? Any concerns?

Isn't it too bold to just ring the neighbors' doorbell?

No, as long as it's at reasonable hours and you politely say hello. If the local then reacts oddly, that's a negative point for the property as well ;-).

Saturday afternoon with nice weather, 50% are sitting outside.

The highway might bother me more. How far away are you really?

Thanks – who can give me more specific help with this?

How can anyone give you more specific help if you don’t answer the questions related to it?

Since it was visible in the picture, I'll just write it here:
Lessingstraße in Hassel
I estimate about 600m (650 yards) as the crow flies to the highway

The highway is located west of the plot – you will likely hear it.

Make your own assessment of the surroundings. Buying a plot is a subjective decision: whether you like something often depends on your gut feeling and previous lifestyle habits.
And remember: a house has a doorbell for a reason—you can still talk to strangers in the age of online forums 😉

Which picture?
Anyway – as soon as there is a west wind, you will probably experience some odor nuisance.
Living near a highway is… well, something you get used to.
My sister’s house is located close to Leipzig Airport, which is also a European hub for the German Post.
My sister and my parents regularly complain about it (airport expansion and the introduction of DHL night flights happened after the house was built). When we visit, the noise bothers us less (unless a low-flying plane passes by).

You should really plan to spend a full weekday and a weekend day there (possibly checking the wind direction beforehand using a weather app). Spend the day onsite (maybe in a nearby café) and talk to the neighbors.
