ᐅ Noise level of a metal roof on a single-sloped roof (also known as a shed roof)

We are considering installing a metal roof on our shed roof house and garage. We are just wondering how loud it is during wind and rain. Has anyone had experience with how much noise it creates for the neighbors?

It is difficult to help you effectively because you provide very little basic information. In principle, a metal roof can be dampened by constructing it to be vibration-rigid (for example, using a sandwich panel design) or by supporting it with appropriate elastic mounts. The type of coating also affects the acoustic properties.

Hello @frsytiwo, I can share my own experience with double standing seam zinc roofing: I would definitely choose it again. I don’t find it any louder than a roof covered with tiles. How is your overall roof construction planned? Regarding noise, the complete system should be considered.

So far, I have had good experience with this roof setup: double standing seam zinc – tongue and groove boards -> ventilation gap -> Pavatex -> mineral wool insulation -> double drywall lining. It’s a single-pitch roof with a 7° (7°) slope and photovoltaic panels installed on part of the surface.

Additionally: Directly beneath the metal sheet, a "structured separation layer with carrier fleece" was installed. This can be roughly imagined as a short-pile artificial turf layer. The entire standing seam roof rests on this. It is not fastened rigidly to the roofing material at any point, allowing the zinc sheets to expand and contract with temperature changes. I believe this separation layer, combined with the complete tongue-and-groove boarding layer, also contributes to noise reduction to some extent. The separation layer primarily serves a moisture-regulating function.
