Dear forum members, I have a problem that is driving me crazy.
I have a chimney in my house (first occupied in 2017) because I would like to install a wood stove in my living area at some point. Currently, I don’t have the financial means for it, and yes, I know that a wood stove in a new house doesn’t make much sense, but I would still like to have one eventually.

Now birds have discovered the chimney as a playground. At first, it was crows, and now wagtails are active there from sunrise to sunset, pecking, knocking, and hammering away. On the ground floor, the noises sound muffled and usually don’t bother me much because I’m often busy. But on the upper floor, the chimney runs through the children’s room where my 7-month-old son and I sleep. There, the sounds are extremely loud and make it hard for my child to fall asleep. If he sleeps longer, I wake up because of the birds. When I open the attic hatch, the birds fly away and stay gone for about an hour, then they come back again.
I am attaching a picture to show the chimney (and the birds’ droppings).

Does anyone have any idea how I can get rid of the birds? I’m really grateful for any advice!

  • Get a cat and provide a way for it to climb onto the roof.
  • Attach an artificial plastic bird (crow, hawk, or similar) to the chimney.
  • Install a wind chime with reflective elements.

Perhaps it is enough to install a wind sensor nearby?

Thanks for the ideas! The house has two full stories and a shallow pitched roof, so the cat is definitely out of the question. The birds can enjoy some peace and quiet thanks to the house’s height. Where would be the best place to install a wind chime or a weather vane?
I took the photo quickly just now.

Attach a small cover made of chicken wire, and that should give you some peace of mind for now. Once the chimney is installed, you can reassess the situation. The chimney is probably the highest point in the area, making it an ideal spot for birds.
