ᐅ New Single-Family Home Construction – Gas or Air Source Heat Pump + Photovoltaic System + Energy Storage?

Hello everyone,

I will be building a house in 2021/2022 and will live in it myself. It’s a 10x10 meter (33x33 feet), 1.5-story standard single-family house. The roof is a pitched roof with a 40-degree pitch, ridge direction North/South (so the roof faces East/West and can be equipped with photovoltaic panels).

Now, my question: Gas is available in the area. Which heating technology would you recommend?

Gas? Air-source heat pump + photovoltaic + battery storage? Ground-source heat pump? Or something completely different?

And who can give me advice like this without any hidden profit motives (like heating installers always pushing gas, etc.)?

Regards,
Flo

@nullhorn: What was the outcome of the meeting? Which option did you decide on?

Since it turned out that we do not have a gas connection, it will come down to a heat pump plus photovoltaic system. And because I have limited space inside the house, I thought of using an outdoor unit instead of a split system.

At the moment, I am still dealing with the notary, land acquisition, and slope on the property, so I have put the heating plans on hold for now.

Without having checked recently, were there positive updates on July 1st regarding the KfW for KfW 55?

We are also considering which type of heating system is best for us.
Gas + solar for hot water + ventilation (KfW 55) or air-to-water heat pump + ventilation (KfW 55 ee).

In our new development area, the gas lines are basically right outside the door. So the gas option seems obvious for us. We want peace of mind and don’t want to do any fine-tuning or have to figure out which setting is the right one. I am not a fan of air-to-water heat pumps with an outdoor unit. If at all, only a compact unit without an outdoor component. However, not all general contractors support this compact solution. A ground-source heat pump is not an option for us.

KfW 55 = up to €18,000
KfW 55 ee = up to €26,250

In 2021, no one installs gas systems anymore. In the countries around us, it is currently being banned, and we won’t be able to avoid this for much longer either. Therefore, especially if you want to "have peace of mind," you should definitely avoid using gas in new constructions.

Oh, and of course, for the past 20 years, it has been standard to install photovoltaic panels on roofs instead of solar thermal systems, because only photovoltaics generate income.

I can’t imagine it will be banned. Only time will tell what the future actually holds. If the municipality is pushing to provide gas connections in a new development area, that would seem like wasted effort based on your statement, and the municipality could have saved itself that trouble.

Using gas is definitely a safe choice. You can still switch to a heat pump in 20 years without any problem. At the moment, gas remains the best option when it comes to cost and reliability.

A close second is the air-to-water heat pump. You can also choose this without any issues. However, it is somewhat more expensive and prone to faults.
