ᐅ New Construction: Underfloor Heating Instead of Radiators and Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery – Yes or No?

We are currently planning the construction of a new single-family house with 134 sqm (1442 sq ft) of floor area in Lower Saxony through a developer. The house is intended to meet the KfW 70 standard. We are now considering installing underfloor heating instead of conventional radiators. According to the developer, the additional cost would be around €8000. Is it worth it? What about rooms like the bedroom? Usually, the window is open at night there.

Furthermore, we are thinking about installing a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery. With this ventilation system, we could reach the KfW 55 standard and thus qualify for additional funding. After deducting the subsidy, the ventilation system would cost us about €4000.

Is all of this worthwhile?

..... According to an independent building expert, the advantage of this system is that we only need to heat to about 35 degrees Celsius (95°F) when using underfloor heating alone....
How is this advantage reflected compared to the additional investment cost?

..... The developer is a well-established company that has been operating for 30 years and completes around 150 builds per year.... They have their own energy consultant who models the house on a computer and can tell us if the entire package meets the requirements for KFW 55.
Whether it is necessary to desperately pursue a specific subsidy level should be carefully considered on a case-by-case basis. The idea of receiving "free gifts" is misleading. Subsidies are intended to partly offset the higher costs involved. How successful this is depends on the individual case. In any event, the expected running costs should be calculated in advance. This requires knowing the actual demand (capacity, energy) for heating and hot water.

Best regards.

Hello €uro,

That is unfortunately a mistake. Some time ago, I completed the planning for a KfW40 house, with radiators!
Then please write how you came to that conclusion; I would be interested. It’s certainly not just about the radiators alone.

... I’m interested; using just the radiators surely isn’t enough.
Absolutely correct, the type of heating surfaces plays a rather secondary role.
In my case: timber frame construction, detail. Heat loss calculation, fully modern air-source heat pump with low capacity, controlled mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, and radiators as heating surfaces.

We have decided on underfloor heating and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. Today, the energy consultant also informed us that this will allow us to achieve KfW 55 standard.
