Our newly installed refrigerator is humming. Is this still normal nowadays, or am I too sensitive? Our kitchen is part of a large open-plan space that includes the dining and living areas. I can even hear the refrigerator when I’m in the living area. What can I do? Could it be because of the large open space? My 25-year-old refrigerator in the old apartment didn’t make any noise.

My Miele washing machine is 2dB louder than yours during washing and spinning... seems to make quite a difference...The dB scale is not linear either. The perceived loudness roughly halves or doubles every 10dB up or down, while sound pressure and sound intensity follow an even steeper curve in relation to dB.
