Our newly installed refrigerator is humming. Is this still normal nowadays, or am I too sensitive? Our kitchen is part of a large open-plan space that includes the dining and living areas. I can even hear the refrigerator when I’m in the living area. What can I do? Could it be because of the large open space? My 25-year-old refrigerator in the old apartment didn’t make any noise.

The built-in fridge, because the design doesn’t matter there. Exactly..
I mean: it looks great inside. Without the price. More stylish than mine. Without the price. But mine is nice too. The Gaggenau actually looks ugly to me because of the price.
If it were a stove… that you can see…
But it’s about the noise: please try stuffing fabric, cotton, or something similar all around it and check, uh… listen, if it improves.
I’m familiar with noises from open kitchens, and I’m quite sensitive (no kids here :P ), but I don’t know of annoying noises from relatively new electrical appliances.

@ypg from Gaggenau, you can get almost any appliance. You can also have it as a stove.
In our home, all visible appliances are from Gaggenau. It would have looked odd if the design wasn’t consistent throughout.
You can hear our current refrigerator (Miele) as well. Try tapping it firmly to see if the noise changes or try the tip from @Vicky Pedia.

But the noise issue: please try stuffing fabric, cotton, or something similar all around and see, uh... listen if it improves. Oh my God! What nonsense!!! Of course, you can insulate the noise caused by a malfunction. Putting mattresses in front of the refrigerator... However, the technically correct approach is to identify and fix the root cause.
From my own experience: resonance issue...
Typical Mistakes with Refrigerators
- Too empty
- Door left open too long or too often
- Contact with other furniture / vibrations transferred to the cabinet
- No-frost models making noises due to a fan / vibrations caused by contact between the refrigerator contents and the fan
- Setting the temperature too low (normally cooling at +4°C (39°F), freezing at -18°C (0°F))
- Ambient temperature too high / insufficient ventilation at the back
- Cardinal sin: putting warm food inside
You also need to get used to new everyday noises. Recently opened floor plans? Sound reflections?
House still partially empty with lots of glass? That doesn’t help.
