Tremosine27 Aug 2014 18:43Hello,
we want to install the new Morliden doors on our older Billy bookshelf. And for the first time, something isn’t working with IKEA! The door hinges need to be positioned deeper at the top and higher at the bottom than stated in the instructions because there are no holes at the specified mounting height on our Billy at all. That wouldn’t even be a problem if it weren’t for the following:
The hinge mounting screws for Morliden are much thinner than the pre-drilled Billy holes – they don’t hold firmly. The corresponding screws for the Aneboda doors on our other Billy bookshelf look different – they are thicker and shorter and hold securely!!
What is wrong here?
Thanks, Tremosine

IKEA-Experte27 Aug 2014 19:01Hello, the new Billy shelves have 3 mm (0.12 inch) holes instead of 5 mm (0.20 inch). So you need to use a 3 mm (0.12 inch) drill bit when drilling holes for the new doors.
You can also replace the thin screws with thicker ones. These have the IKEA part number 100344 and should be available from customer service.

IKEA-Experte5 Sep 2014 20:49I just stumbled over the headline again and noticed that I probably wrote some nonsense in parts. I had the Oxberg doors in mind instead of the MORLIDEN doors. With MORLIDEN, the screws cannot be replaced if the holes are drilled too large. Instead, the entire mounting plate must be replaced or the slots need to be filed wider to fit larger screws. Alternatively, you could possibly just insert 5mm (0.2 inch) dowels into the oversized holes.

IKEA-Experte27 Oct 2014 10:27Hello, the mounting plate should still be available, but it is only useful if you have already drilled new holes that are too large. The new Billy has holes in different positions, so you always need to drill new holes, and then you might as well drill some 3mm (1/8 inch) holes for the included plate.

Besatalua27 Oct 2014 11:34Correct, the holes for attaching the door on the new Billy are positioned higher and lower than the previous ones.
Since we can mark the height of the holes to be drilled by holding the door (hinged to the frame), but not their horizontal position, our legitimate concern is that the doors might end up misaligned. Before I start drilling anything incorrectly, I have two questions—one about the holes, and another as an alternative to the old 5mm hinges.
1. What is the distance of the new holes from the front edge (where the door hinges would be attached)? If it is at least similar to before—which I assume because of the same length of the hinge plates—I would only need to vertically shift the purchased 5mm hinges on the door relative to the markings on the new frame to make them fit. If not: What exactly is the distance of the new 3mm holes from the edge (so I at least have a fair chance of drilling them correctly)?
2. Do the “old” 5mm hinges still fit into the aluminum frame of the new Morliden door itself? If yes, what is the article number of the old 5mm hinges, and how can I check if they are in stock at the Berlin Lichtenberg store?
Many thanks!
