Dear forum members,

I am looking for some fresh ideas regarding the layout of our ground floor and really hope I’m in the right place here. Unfortunately, I’m currently experiencing a kind of “creative block” and just can’t come up with a satisfying solution. None of our ideas really excite me...

We are completely remodeling a house. The layout for the upper floor is already set (master bedroom, master bathroom, walk-in closet, children’s room, children’s bathroom).

Now it’s time to plan the ground floor. It should include an open kitchen (preferably with an island or similar), a dining area (table for at least 6 people), a living area (large corner sofa with about 3.5 m (11.5 ft) on the long side), as well as a gas fireplace (ideally as a room divider or alternatively on a wall) and a guest toilet. I would really like to make the hallway wider, as it is currently too narrow.

I have attached a floor plan for you. The green areas are the exterior walls; everything else that is also colored must unfortunately remain as is, including the windows. We cannot remove or add any windows—except for the 7-meter (23 ft) wall at the bottom. There we can do whatever we want, including, in theory, a large window wall spanning the entire width.

Maybe some of you have ideas on how to divide up the space. Your ideas are unlimited. I’m really looking forward to your feedback.

Best regards,
Sabrina

P.S. In the other image, I implemented my idea for a guest toilet to widen the hallway...

Same here, since so far we only know the ground floor exterior walls.

You should at least share the upper floor with us as well. Ideally, you post both the ground floor and the upper floor plans here, each showing the existing condition and the proposed design; using the usual color coding black / gray / yellow / red so that the existing structure, demolition, and additions can be clearly distinguished in the combined plan.

Yep.
Show where the load-bearing walls are currently located and what they are supporting above.
It’s also important to know where the pipes/drainage lines are.
And finally, you probably don’t want the sofa facing the street if it can be avoided. So please draw the plot, the orientation (where north is), and where the street is.

There are no limits to your ideas.

P.S.: That will never span so freely between the exterior walls.
