Hello everyone,

we are building a house and recently visited a bathroom showroom.
Since I received a consultation there, I would like to purchase the selected items from that place. However, the prices are so high that I am now looking for an alternative.
Does it make sense to buy the selected items from an online retailer and have them installed?
What would you recommend?
Thank you for your help.
Best regards.

You can give a range here as well.

Just the topic of water supply and wastewater piping can quickly become expensive. No one here can really estimate that.
You can buy toilet seats for $10, but also for $250.
If you buy 5 toilets, 5 sinks, 4 showers, and 3 bathtubs at a home improvement store, around €5,000 (about $5,500) can easily cover it. But who will install the pipes, connect everything, and hang all the fixtures? In a specialized plumbing store including piping and installation, you can quickly spend €30,000 (about $33,000).

You should also factor furniture into your planning.

Straight showers and bathtubs with mixers/fittings are really expensive. Without luxury features, you can easily spend the first 10,000–15,000 euros (approximately $11,000–16,500) on them. Separate floor-level shower trays or tiled floors? How much glass for the walls? Size of the bathtubs? Water inlet/bath rim fittings? Glass coatings for sanitary fixtures? And so on.

For our two large bathrooms, I had planned over 15,000 euros (approximately $16,500), with almost all installation done by ourselves (two toilets, two 60cm (24 inch) washbasins, one 120cm (47 inch) washbasin, four faucets for washbasins, showers 100x100cm (39x39 inch) + 120x120cm (47x47 inch), floor-level shower trays from Kaldewei (color-matched to the tiles), corner glass panels for each, each with Raindance shower heads, bathtub 180x80cm (71x31 inch) in a tub carrier with rim-mounted faucet, small items like flush buttons, siphons, drain fittings, etc., all brands like Duravit Vero, Kaldewei Conoflat, Kronenbach faucets for washbasins and bathtub, and similar).

So, it really depends on the quality you want (see Jochen104).

Why do you have to make everything so complicated? If I can’t plan this more precisely here, then let’s just drop it. I just thought I could roughly estimate what a normal standard installation would cost. Of course, I can order a toilet bowl for 100 euros at a hardware store or for 2,000 euros from a catalog, so I’ll just include one for 500 euros in the planning.

For example, in our initial cost estimate, we have the following items:
- Wall tiles, floor tiles priced per square meter (square yard)
- Shower waterproofing 1,000 euros
- Plumbing pipes and insulation 5,000 euros
- Bathroom fixtures 20,000 euros
- Water meters, etc. 6,000 euros

You can manage with your budget, definitely!
As a good reference for prices, just take a look online at Reuter or Megabad, and add a buffer for the plumbing contractor who will be doing the work for you. If you plan to partially rent out the property (where it doesn’t need to be so high-end) and partially use it yourself (where you want it to look nice), a mixed calculation like this should work – but don’t expect too much, since your budget also needs to cover installation costs.
Installing a shower won’t cost you just 100€, but rather several times that – that’s what I mean by having a buffer for the plumber.

I’ll do that right away. We just want to plan realistically, as far as that is possible, of course.
And the mixed calculation is clear: compromises for rental areas and a bit nicer for ourselves.
That’s why I wrote “standard” – dreams increasingly give way to cold hard numbers and reality.
Of course, everything properly installed and a good plumber.
