ᐅ Networking Technology in 2016 for a Single-Family Home

Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the selection of network components for my future single-family home (approximately 200m² (2,150 sq ft)).

In this context, CAT7 cables will be installed in all rooms and centrally routed to the utility room, where they will be connected via a patch panel.

All in all, I will need a 48-port gigabit switch (preferably PoE or better PoE+).
The only question is: which model or brand, or from which manufacturer?

Do you have any experience? Can you recommend gigabit switches of this size?

Please no discussions about the size or design of the network switch.
I deliberately want to avoid local switches (for example, near the home theater wall) and connect all network cables to a corresponding wall outlet (my partner insists... theme "everything always has to look tidy" and so on...).

Thanks in advance for your input.

Best regards

As always here, what one owns is the maximum that everyone needs, and anyone who exceeds that or does it better is often discredited.

Well, I wouldn’t say there is any discrediting going on in this thread. Everyone simply has their own opinion and naturally sees that as the optimum. When someone does more, you initially tend to see it as unnecessary because your own use case doesn’t require it.

It is the same discussion as with home automation. I’ve had many conversations about it with friends and acquaintances, and those who don’t have it say they don’t need such a gadget. On the other hand, I wouldn’t want to go without it anymore.

In the end, every original poster (OP) has to pick out the arguments and information that are relevant for them.

Speaking of information, one more note: At first, PoE was mentioned. My 24-port switch doesn’t have PoE because I don’t have any devices that need it yet, but some will be coming soon. However, large PoE switches always have a more or less noisy fan. As soon as I need it, I will get an 8-port PoE switch additionally, since those usually don’t require a fan yet.

I also had a (dual) network outlet installed in almost every room. The extra cost is negligible, but the effort to retrofit later would be enormous. Even my garage is networked.

For all the Wi-Fi enthusiasts: this way I can set up 25 access points throughout the house.

I included PoE mainly for the cameras, but I plan to get a small switch separately when I install the cameras later.

Okay... cool, then I’ll do it like that... I’ll get a 24-port switch without PoE and a switch with PoE...

One more thing about switches with PoE. It's usually not an issue, but when comparing different types and manufacturers, you should check how many watts they provide in total and per port.
