Hello everyone,

I am currently thinking about the shading for my 5x5m (16x16 ft) wooden deck, which will be used as an outdoor dining area. Normally, I would have installed a louvered roof without hesitation. Until I saw this:

Wooden terrace in the garden with several trees and a shady leaf canopy, open outdoor area.

Is such natural shading practical? The distance between the crab apple trees is exactly 5m (16 ft), which matches our dimensions perfectly. Which plants are suitable for this? Preferably not ones that attract a lot of insects...

We have now made our decision.
There will be shading provided by Japanese maple trees around the wooden deck (marked in red).
The slope or dense planting on the south side will be removed, as well as that seating block by the wooden deck.

Very nice idea and a very, very beautiful garden concept overall.
May I ask if you created this drawing yourself, or if you received or commissioned it from a landscape gardener?

My dream would be to plant a fully grown weeping willow in the garden, but in terms of maintenance it's comparable to a birch.

If it’s truly your dream, I would think it over. To quote Marie Kondo: Surround yourself with things that bring you joy.
I almost bought a standard sink because it’s easier to maintain than the solid, oiled oak countertop in the bathroom. But then I decided, why would I give up something important to me just because it requires more effort, and since when has being lazy ever made me happy?
That doesn’t have to apply to you, but I always have to be careful not to deny myself things I really value for the wrong reasons.

Thank you.
The architect got the landscape gardener to design that. I would never have thought of placing the access to the front door on the side or positioning the wooden deck diagonally at the corner of the house.

I really like this sentence.

Mulberry trees are quite common here in Perth, and we initially planned to plant one in the center of our garden. However, when the fruits fall and get stepped on, they create a mess everywhere.
