Hello everyone,
Let me briefly introduce myself: I’m Rüdiger from the area around Freiburg, 40 years old, working as an IT manager. Photography enthusiast and sci-fi fan.
I have a large project planned over the next three years, with implementation expected sometime in 2022. The good thing is: plenty of time to plan. At the moment, everything is still quite rough, but I see it as a hobby for the next two years.
I own a property with a 1940s parents’ house in great condition. I will take over the house; my mother will likely move into a bungalow that we will build on the property. At the same time, the “main house” (I’ve always wanted to say that) will be renovated and extended by about 50m² (540 sq ft).
I will be more active here from now on, probably with more questions than answers at the beginning, so I appreciate your understanding.
Currently, one topic is occupying my mind:
The house has a vaulted cellar, about 40m² (430 sq ft), with a natural floor. Until a few years ago, there was also a private deep well inside, which we (yes, not the best idea) filled in some years ago. The cellar is where the house’s electricity and water connections enter. Access is currently only possible from outside, but until the 1960s, there was also access through the house, which I would like to restore.
My question is:
What would be the best way to use the cellar? I don’t drink wine, so a wine cellar is out of the question. I don’t need a party room, as I have plenty of space for that. A storage room for supplies? I guess that would require remodeling…
Maybe this question sounds a bit odd, but: what is a sensible use for the cellar?
Its condition is actually good, though the walls would probably need sandblasting and new plastering.
Thanks for your advice and best regards
Rüdiger

Photography enthusiast Does being a fan mean you’re a photographer yourself? Analog or digital?
If you use analog, you could set up a darkroom to develop your own photos.
For digital photography: are you into high-speed photography? Water droplets, for example, can be a lot of fun. That requires a water basin and a dripping mechanism. Not something you can just quickly pack away. Would you hang your pictures in the basement?
How do you indulge your sci-fi hobby?
Maybe display a collection in the basement, use a game room, or something like that?
Are you into wellness?
Hot tub, sauna, relaxation area?
Or more of a DIY person? Workbench, tool cabinets, maybe building your own wooden furniture?
Book lover? If it’s dry, a library and a reading nook, atmospheric lighting in a vaulted room.
I think a vaulted cellar would be too good to just use for storage...
Would you like to share some pictures?
I’m really curious!

Hello and good morning,
thank you for the feedback so far, I appreciated it.
So:
- Dominastudio ... is off the table for now, but I’ll keep it in mind
- Whiskey, I don’t drink alcohol at all, that would be a waste
- Wellness: I probably have enough space upstairs for that as well
- DIY: I still have an old garage on the property from the farmhouse era with over 40m² (430 sq ft), which will be enough for that...
There is a knee wall about 1.60m (5'3") high, then a vaulted ceiling up to around 3m (10') (I need to measure soon). I’m planning to put up a thermometer and a hygrometer in the next few days to see what the readings look like. It feels quite dry overall.
About my hobbies: Being a sci-fi fan doesn’t mean I attend conventions or anything like that. A few keywords: Douglas Adams, Perry Rhodan, Star Trek, Simak, Dan Simmons, Discworld.
Photography is a hobby of mine, digital with a Sony A7II (formerly), now again with a proper camera (Nikon D800).

Hi Steven!
M84 is a really cool cycle (and I know them ALL)
War of the Clones is cool, already read it.

What exactly does the "climate cellar" do?
