Georg_101121 Dec 2012 12:05Hello,
I am still in the planning phase and would like to get some opinions. What do you think about the sliding door? I chose a lower height to make the look a bit lighter and less bulky. Or would it be better to have it at a higher height as well? I can’t decide.

Nayla_106821 Dec 2012 13:30Hello,
oh dear, I don’t want to criticize your design, but I’d like to offer some tips!
Your layout is quite busy. Also, the different heights of the wall cabinets simply don’t look good. Am I correct in assuming the wall is 3.50m (11 ft 6 in) long? To bring more harmony, I would suggest the following, from left to right:
*Base Cabinets*
- 60cm (24 in) base cabinet with 1 door
- 60cm (24 in) base cabinet with 3 drawers
- Base cabinet for the stove
- 60cm (24 in) base cabinet with 3 drawers
- 50cm (20 in) sink cabinet
- 45cm (18 in) dishwasher with 50cm (20 in) front panel
- filler strips of 5cm (2 in) each on left and right sides
*Wall Cabinets*
- 120cm (47 in) sliding door cabinet
- Extractor hood cabinet (if using an IKEA under-cabinet hood and no gas cooktop is installed, matching the height of the other wall cabinets is possible!)
- Wall cabinet for microwave
- 50cm (20 in) wall cabinet
- 50cm (20 in) wall cabinet
- filler strips of 5cm (2 in) each on left and right sides again
Try placing it this way in your planner and then let me know.
Best regards
Nayla
PS: To create some variation, you could also introduce a different color. For example, high-gloss white cabinets at the top.

IKEA-Experte21 Dec 2012 16:52I agree with Nayla on this. However, I find base cabinets with doors unnecessary and always prefer drawers. Of course, you need to consider what kitchen utensils you have and plan accordingly.
I would definitely not break up the upper cabinets with an empty space on top. If you don’t want to do it with a different color as Nayla suggested, you can use shorter doors on a 92cm (36 inches) cabinet and leave the rest below as an open shelf. The PERFEKT shelf is also suitable for adding variety.
Take a look at the videos on the IKEA Germany YouTube channel. They might offer some additional inspiration.

IKEA-Experte21 Dec 2012 17:50Please upload the complete floor plan. Would it possibly make sense to add base cabinets at least 35cm (14 inches) deep along another wall?
In your layout, the base cabinets together with the dishwasher occupy exactly 335cm (132 inches). If you only have 335cm (132 inches) of space, that will be too tight. If the outer cabinets have no clearance from the wall, the drawers or the dishwasher door may scrape against the wall.

Georg_101121 Dec 2012 17:51I have exactly 338cm (133 inches) of space. Floor plan coming up shortly.
The pillar next to the kitchen unit is a pantry cupboard, which used to be common. There is a radiator under the window. And I also want a fridge-freezer combination. Oh man, I want so many things.

IKEA-Experte21 Dec 2012 20:27I would remove the pantry cabinet. If it’s a rental apartment, the landlord probably won’t have an issue since you won’t be taking the kitchen with you when you move. (Usually, after moving, you need to add or replace cabinets, but the original cabinet carcasses will no longer be available.)
Instead of the pantry cabinet, you could install the oven at eye level in a tall cabinet or integrate the fridge-freezer combo into the row. The pictures with upper and base cabinets aligned and at uniform height look better than the first version.
I don’t really like the stainless steel front on the dishwasher in the overall design. It would be better to use a 50cm (20 inches) front panel and adjust the rest accordingly.
