Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my pet, specifically my curious tomcat, who keeps scratching the underside of my KALLAX shelf. The piece of furniture is made of particleboard with a white laminate finish.
The scratching happens constantly, sometimes even at night, and this has not only caused unsightly scratch marks but I am also worried that the material is starting to chip in some areas. I have tried to protect these spots with wood glue, but it does not hold for long.
So my question is: Are there effective methods or products to stop the scratching without harming or overly restricting the animal? Perhaps someone also has an idea on how to make the shelf itself more durable so it is less attractive to scratch?
I would really appreciate any advice or experiences!

I can really understand your frustration. It’s annoying when your own furniture gets damaged, but at the same time, you don’t want to punish your cat.
What worked for me was installing scratching boards next to the furniture and also using some catnip on them. This helps redirect the cat’s scratching instinct quite effectively.
Sometimes scratching in unexpected places can also be a sign of boredom in cats. Make sure they have enough engagement and playtime, as this often helps to better manage their energy.
Keep at it; it’s definitely a combination of approaches. 🙂

Secure a sturdy protective panel made of acrylic or polycarbonate with screwsThanks for the tip! That sounds doable. However, I wonder if it might be too noticeable visually.

Install scratching boards and attract with catnipI could try that. The tomcat already shows increased interest in certain materials in some spots.

Have you considered why your tomcat chooses this specific area?I suspect it’s because of the spot under the shelf. Since the tomcat likes to rest in small, sheltered corners, he might be scratching to mark the area or to feel the material and define the space. There is a sturdy scratching post nearby, but maybe it’s not attractive enough.
I will definitely start with the acrylic protection and alternative scratching options. Thanks for the great suggestions!
