Hello everyone,

my pet constantly drools on my Ikea Kallax shelving unit, and I’m wondering if any of you have sealed this piece of furniture specifically to reduce the issue. The surface already shows some small discolorations and slight watermarks, which, to be honest, is a bit frustrating.

I am considering treating the Kallax with a varnish or sealant, but I’m not sure which product is suitable or how to proceed without changing the appearance too much. Has anyone had experience with this?

I’m especially interested in which sealants are recommended for furniture with a smooth, rather matte surface and if there are any special care instructions to follow when a pet regularly drools on it.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Does anyone have experience with the durability of such sealants, especially in combination with pet use?

From my own experience with cats that frequently scratch furniture: a clear varnish provides good protection against liquids, but it offers little resistance to scratches. Small scratches will still become visible after a while, and the protective layer can peel off in some areas.

A plexiglass or glass cover is virtually unbeatable, especially if your pet often comes into contact with the surface. The sealant then acts as basic protection for the furniture, while the cover takes on the mechanical stress.

If you prefer not to use a cover, you should regularly perform small touch-ups on the varnish. Cotton swabs and special furniture touch-up pens help to repair minor blemishes.

This way, saliva stains can be controlled much more effectively over time.

I sealed the Kallax for my two dogs with clear varnish from the hardware store. Since then, there have been no stains. It is important to sand well and apply several coats.

So far, it has withstood mechanical stress without any problems.
