Hello community,

I have a somewhat unusual topic that has been on my mind: my pet cat recently started making a hiding spot in an IKEA Kallax shelf—specifically in one of the open cube compartments. Now I’m wondering how safe such a hiding place really is, both in terms of the stability of the structure and any possible hazards for the animal and the household.

The following points are important to me:
- Can the shelf be damaged by the cat climbing or hiding in it frequently?
- Are there any risks if the cat spends extended periods inside (e.g., getting stuck, compartments or bins slipping)?
- Should I take additional measures to make the hiding spot safer?

I appreciate any experiences, assessments, or recommendations for safer alternatives. Thanks in advance for your help!

The Kallax shelving unit is generally sturdy but not designed for constant load from animals. Make sure the unit stands firmly and the shelves do not sag. Boxes inside should fit well to prevent pinching. For added safety, you can secure the shelving unit to the wall.

The IKEA Kallax series is made from particleboard, with a load capacity of about 13-15 kilograms (29-33 pounds) per compartment. The typical weight of a cat is usually well below this, so the shelf is designed to handle occasional climbing. However, constant stress from aggressive jumping may cause premature wear.

Risks mainly arise if loose fabric baskets or compartments are used, as they can tip over when jumping in or out. Additionally, access to compartments containing cables or objects can be dangerous. Securing the shelf to the wall significantly improves stability.

I recommend firmly anchoring the shelf to the wall, using soft liners inside the compartments, and ensuring that no hazardous items are accessible. Also, stable floor contact of the feet is essential to minimize the risk of tipping.

I have a cat myself that has similar preferences for hiding spots in furniture.

In my case, it was important to secure the Kallax shelving unit to the wall using brackets and screws to completely eliminate the risk of tipping over. The compartments where my cat likes to hide are lined with soft blankets. This not only makes the space cozy but also cushions it well to prevent any pinching.

This is really the most important safety measure—if the shelving isn’t stable, it can tip over, especially with larger cats.

I would also recommend regularly checking whether the boxes have shifted or if gaps have formed due to stress, to avoid injuries.

If your pet is particularly active or curious, it might be worth considering a shelter designed specifically for cats.
