ᐅ My pet is chewing on everything on the Kallax unit – are there better types of paint or finishes for this?

Hello everyone,
I have the following problem: my pet – specifically our somewhat playful young cat – keeps biting the edges and surfaces of our IKEA Kallax shelving unit. Not only does it look unpleasant, but the surface has become noticeably roughened and damaged.
I am now looking for a solution to better protect the Kallax. Specifically, I am interested to know if anyone has experience with special paints or sealants that are really durable against bites and scratches, while also being as safe as possible for the pet.
Are there types of coatings that are more suitable than the original surfaces? Is it necessary to apply multiple layers? And very importantly: which products are well tolerated and safe for cats (low odor and low in harmful substances) during and after application?
I look forward to your tips and recommendations!

Mechanical protection (e.g., edge guards or acrylic strips) can be very effectiveThank you, that is also an option, but it doesn’t suit my Ikea-style design very well. I’m looking more for a durable paint finish that is as invisible as possible.
Besides, I’m intrigued by the challenge of finding a truly robust and non-toxic paint for a long-term improvement.

Make sure the varnish is specifically advertised as scratch-resistant. Another important factor is the chemical adhesion to the Kallax material, which is made of coated particleboard – not every paint adheres well there on a long-term basis.
I just wanted to encourage you again! 🙂 The combination of high-quality clear coat and careful preparation is worth its weight in gold! And don’t worry about safety—if you use high-quality, water-based products, it will turn out really well, and your cat will be happy too since there won’t be any strong odors in the room.
I believe you’ll find a solution! 🙂

- Water-based polyurethane floor varnishes or hardwax oils like those from Osmo
- At least 3 coats with sanding between layers
- Ensure good ventilation and follow drying times
- Mechanical edge protection is possible as an addition but, due to design reasons, not my preferred option
If anyone has specific product names with experience reports, feel free to share!
