ᐅ My Kallax shelf wobbles when I step on it – How can I stabilize it?

henrikHello everyone,
I have an issue with my IKEA Kallax shelf that wobbles slightly when I step on it. The overall construction seems stable, but I can feel that the shelf does not sit firmly on the floor, which causes a side-to-side movement when placing it or stepping on it briefly. My question is what effective securing measures I can take to prevent this wobbling without having to significantly modify or alter the original structure.
In particular, I am interested in whether it is advisable to use floor protectors, add extra screws, or install special brackets to fix it to the wall. Perhaps other users have had good experiences with certain methods, especially regarding safety and stable support.
Thank you in advance!

My concern is which effective securing measures I can take to prevent this shakingA Kallax shelf tends to wobble if it is placed on an uneven surface or if the fasteners are not properly tightened. I recommend first checking the location for any unevenness. An uneven floor is often the cause of the problem.
As a securing measure, furniture glides with compensating felt or rubber pads are ideal because they protect the floor and compensate for minor unevenness.
Additionally, using angle brackets to attach the unit to the wall is advisable. These not only prevent shaking but also minimize the risk of tipping over. Alternatively, double-sided, non-slip adhesive pads can be placed under the feet.
It is also important to regularly retighten all screws on your Kallax, as they can loosen over time during use, reducing stability.
In summary:
- Check and, if necessary, fix the floor
- Use furniture glides with rubber or felt pads
- Secure with wall brackets
- Retighten all screws
These measures are common, effective, and provide the safest long-term solution.
Hello Henrik,
I agree with usbla and would like to elaborate a bit more. Especially with Kallax shelves, the wobbling often occurs because the furniture is not sitting completely flat on the floor. Sometimes even a difference of just a few millimeters (inches) is enough to affect stability.
A simple and practical solution is to use furniture shims or leveling pads that you can place under individual feet. These come in different thicknesses and materials such as rubber or plastic. They don’t slip easily and are also gentle on the floor.
In addition, wall mounting is crucial. Even if you don’t want to make major modifications, I recommend the small investment in brackets that can be screwed to the back of the unit and the wall. While this involves minor structural changes, it significantly prevents tipping and wobbling.
If you don’t want to use wall plugs (anchors), clamp or adhesive hooks can be an alternative. These are less invasive but often do not provide the same load capacity.
Finally, check your screws and fastenings – with Kallax, the joints can loosen due to slight pressure. Tightening them is a simple but essential step.
I hope these tips help you out. 🙂

a difference of a few millimetersExactly. If the piece of furniture is not flush with the floor, it will wobble.
First, check with a spirit level whether the floor is even.

angle brackets recommended for wall mountingWall brackets are the most secure solution against shaking and tipping. Easy to install.

without having to extensively rebuild the shelf or alter the original structureIf you don’t want to drill screws into the wall, non-slip pads and furniture gliders can help.
