Hello everyone, I recently repainted my Kallax shelf to change its color. However, after the color change, some areas appear blotchy or show variations in color intensity, which is especially noticeable on the larger surfaces. It looks like the paint was applied unevenly or absorbed more in certain spots. I suspect it might be related to the surface or the preparation, but I’m unsure what to do about it specifically. What experiences have you had with color differences on Kallax units after repainting? What reliably helps to make the surfaces look even and clean again? Thanks in advance for your tips!

I sometimes see people using spray cans or spray guns for applying paint. Would you recommend that for a Kallax module, or is it better to avoid it if you want as uniform a surface as possible? Spray cans are not inherently the perfect solution but are often overrated. It is much easier to fix mistakes with a brush than to even out fine spray mist. Also, brushes save more paint and give you greater control, especially on edges or recessed areas like those on a Kallax. Of course, for a professional finish and with a lot of practice, spraying can be better, but for everyday DIY work, a brush is usually the better choice.
As an additional note, if the stains are caused by the material: MDF absorbs moisture strongly, especially with thin paints, which can lead to uneven color tones. Two measures are particularly helpful here:
1. Special MDF primers: These seal the surface better than conventional primers, preventing uneven absorption.
2. Color-toned intermediate coats: Some apply a very thin, opaque intermediate layer, for example with a white or neutral base, which is then covered by the final paint color. This helps to reduce irregularities.
I also recommend keeping the humidity low and controlled during painting – avoid drafts and maintain a moderate temperature. This prevents the paint from drying too quickly and appearing uneven.
