Hello everyone,

Since I last rearranged my KALLAX shelving unit, I’ve noticed that one of the modules is noticeably wobbly. It’s a standard 2x2 combination that was stable before, but after moving it, the single element now feels unstable and tends to rock with slight pressure. The unit is placed on a flat laminate floor, and I haven’t made any changes to the shelf itself, other than relocating it.

I suspect that either the surface it’s sitting on has changed slightly or that one of the joints might not be fully tightened anymore. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to quickly and effectively improve the stability of modules like this? I’d prefer to avoid drilling or making major alterations.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello puckle,

Your issue with the wobbly KALLAX unit is actually quite common, especially after moving furniture. The first step is to check whether the unit is sitting completely flat on the floor underneath. Laminate floors can sometimes have slight unevenness that isn’t immediately noticeable.

My tip: use small felt pads or furniture coasters that can be placed under the unit to compensate for any floor irregularities. This will stabilize the contact surface and prevent rocking.

Alternatively, you can also check if the connecting screws of the individual KALLAX components are still tightly fastened, as they can loosen during moving.

If you like, I can provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to securely reassemble and stabilize the unit.

Hi puckle! 🙂

Wobbly furniture can be really annoying, especially when you’ve only moved it and haven’t done anything else. As gregto already mentioned, sometimes it’s simply the floor – I always use self-adhesive anti-slip pads to compensate, which you can easily stick under the feet. They provide stability and are very discreet.

And hey, if your entire KALLAX is only wobbly because it slightly rocks, you can also slide a small wedge underneath – these are available at any hardware store. This has often worked wonders for me without having to alter the furniture. 😉

Hello everyone,

to effectively fix the wobbling of a KALLAX unit, it’s best to proceed systematically. First, it would be helpful to know whether your unit is standing alone or is part of a larger combination, and how exactly it is positioned—for example, freestanding against a wall or open in the room.

If it is freestanding, I recommend securing the unit to the wall afterwards. IKEA offers special angle brackets for wall attachment that stabilize the shelf effectively.

If the unit is part of a larger system, even small shifts in the individual elements can cause wobbling. It is important to carefully check all connections again and, if necessary, tighten the screws or install connector plates. The floor should also be checked precisely: sometimes a slight unevenness of just a few millimeters (inches) is enough to cause tipping.

Could you please describe in more detail which measures you have already tried and how exactly the unit is set up? That way I can give you more targeted advice.

Check if the module is lying completely flat on the underside

Thanks gregto, that is certainly a useful initial guideline. I just looked underneath with a small mirror and it does seem that one corner is slightly resting while the opposite corner is almost slightly lifted.

Use anti-slip pads

I find the idea of using anti-slip pads quite practical. Does anyone have recommendations on which material or thickness works best?

Secure the KALLAX module to the wall

Since the shelf is actually positioned somewhat freely and not flush against the wall, direct wall mounting is currently difficult to implement, at least not without major changes.

So, I will first try to level the base surface and then check the connections.

Good morning,

I would like to suggest a somewhat more structured approach as a supplement, which has already helped many KALLAX owners:

1. Check the base surface: Use a spirit level or even just a ruler to examine the floor for unevenness. Small irregularities can be compensated with felt pads of different thicknesses.

2. Inspect connections: Are all screws and dowels on the module loose? Tighten them!

3. Check the arrangement: If you have multiple KALLAX units, it’s advisable to connect them together (IKEA offers brackets for this) so they work as a single unit and don’t wobble individually.

4. If the unit stands alone, try attaching it to the wall or at least placing an anti-slip strip between the unit and the floor for extra stability.

5. Finally, perform a last check of the alignment – sometimes it helps to apply light pressure and slightly move the unit forward or backward until it is optimally positioned.

This way, you can narrow down and resolve the cause step by step.
