Hello everyone,
I recently gave my Kallax shelf a thorough cleaning because it was a bit dusty. I used a mild cleaner that was supposed to be suitable for wood surfaces according to the instructions. However, I’ve now noticed some blotchy spots on a few areas that weren’t there before. The stains look darker and somewhat shiny in places, which makes the surface uneven in appearance.
My question is: What’s the best way to even out or remove these spots without damaging the surface? Are there any proven methods to reverse discoloration caused by moisture or cleaning products on Kallax units? I’d rather avoid sanding the whole thing since it has a melamine-coated surface rather than a painted finish.
What has your experience been, and what would be the best way to limit the damage? Thanks in advance for your advice!

I can completely understand how frustrating these stains are. I had a similar issue with my Kallax, and what helped me was gently rubbing the spots with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol. I was very careful during the process because I was worried about damaging the surface. The less pressure, the better.
If you still notice slight differences in sheen afterwards, a light coat of furniture polish wax can help even out the appearance – at least that worked for me to balance the look a bit and give the shelf a uniform shine.
Keep at it; it usually turns out better than you expect.

If the stains are not caused by cleaning product residues, it could simply be moisture absorbed into the material.
Drying with a hairdryer on a low setting can help, but avoid using high heat.
Afterwards, gently treat the surface with furniture polish – this often makes a difference.

It sounds like your Kallax got too wet during cleaning.
My advice: place the shelf in a dry area and let it dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours. For stains that don’t come off, you can try using a soft eraser – some surface marks can be removed that way.
Sanding or repainting should be considered only as a last resort.
