ᐅ My Kallax unit tips over when loaded with heavy baskets – what can I do?

bailse4Hello everyone,
I have an issue with my Kallax shelving unit from IKEA that I would like to describe in detail to get some helpful advice. When loading the individual compartments with heavy baskets, especially when they are filled, the shelf becomes unstable – it tips or leans forward. I’m interested in knowing if there are common causes for this and which solutions are recommended to keep it stable without losing much storage space.
The shelf stands on a relatively level floor, is about 1.5 meters wide and around 1.5 meters high (5 feet wide and 5 feet high). The baskets are made of plastic or woven material and can quickly reach weights of 5 to 7 kilograms (11 to 15 pounds) each, sometimes even more.
I have considered attaching the shelf to the wall, but I would prefer a more stable base because I want to keep the room flexible. I’m also wondering if stronger feet or additional braces could solve the problem.
Do you have any concrete experience or technical tips on what measures would be effective to minimize the risk of tipping? Thanks in advance!

Hello bailse4,
I understand your problem and can share some tips that have proven useful in similar cases.
First of all, it’s important to know that although the Kallax shelf from IKEA is designed to be sturdy, its stability can be affected if loaded unevenly or with heavy items, depending on the center of gravity. Especially with heavy baskets in the upper compartments, the weight can pull the unit forward and cause it to become unbalanced.
A very effective solution is to attach the shelf to the wall using the supplied or separately available brackets. You need to choose the appropriate anchors depending on the wall material to ensure a secure fixing.
If wall mounting is not an option, I recommend placing the heaviest baskets in the lower section of the shelf to keep the center of gravity low.
Additionally, non-slip floor pads or special feet with rubber bases can improve stability. Sometimes reinforcing the shelf by attaching a cross brace or panel at the bottom helps as well; this can be screwed on loosely or glued.
Finally, check if the floor is perfectly level. Even slight unevenness can easily cause tipping – in such cases, a suitable base pad can make a difference.
I hope this helps you for now!

I recommend always fastening the shelf to the wall; that provides the necessary safety.Only attaching it to the wall? That’s the typical IKEA advice everyone follows blindly—without considering alternatives. I always wonder why more people don’t think about solid bases that stabilize the shelf independently. Kallax isn’t a fragile piece of art that needs to be fixed just because you thoughtlessly load 7 kilograms (15 pounds) of baskets into it.

The center of gravity is the key here and underestimated by many. Gluing or attaching a longer board underneath can also work wonders, as can counterweights. Simply screwing it to the wall treats the symptoms, not the cause.
Personally, I’m not a fan of hiding shelves behind walls either—flexibility is more important than a fixed-in-place piece of furniture.
