Hello everyone, I recently got a KALLAX shelf from IKEA, and even though I placed a high-quality non-slip mat underneath, the shelf still tips forward slightly. It is a relatively wide model with multiple compartments. The mat is slip-resistant, but the problem persists, especially when I put heavy items in the lower compartments. I have already checked that the floor is level, and it is. Does anyone have an idea why the shelf still tips and how I can reliably prevent this? I would appreciate any helpful suggestions!

Although I placed a high-quality anti-slip mat underneath, the shelf still tips slightly forward from time to time. That’s interesting because an anti-slip mat is mainly designed to prevent slipping, not tipping.
Have you checked whether the shelf is really standing completely level or if the floor might be sloping slightly forward? Even a minimal incline can encourage tipping. Also, the weight distribution plays an important role: if the lower shelves are too heavy and the unit has no back panels or wall anchoring, the center of gravity shifts.
My question is also: what exactly is the mat made of? Some anti-slip mats absorb movement but don’t reduce the leverage force that causes tipping.
Overall, in my opinion, several factors need to be addressed here: perfect levelness, weight distribution, and ultimately the budget for stabilization measures (e.g., wall fastening).

Are you sure the mat is lying completely flat and not creating any ripples?Good point. Additionally, I suggest reconsidering the placement of heavy items. The KALLAX shelving unit is not designed to support extreme loads at the bottom without additional stabilization.
It often tips over because the center of gravity shifts too far forward. A simple solution is to place heavy books or similar items further back or in the middle.
If that is not enough, wall mounting or an extra back panel or floor anchor can help. Some forum members also swear by small brush strips underneath the shelf that act as stoppers.
Hey, I know this problem well! I had the same issue with my KALLAX. 🙂
The mat usually only slows down slipping, but it doesn’t really stop tipping. My advice: try inserting small rubber or felt stoppers underneath or attaching them under the front feet—that helps prevent tipping quite effectively. Even though IKEA offers brackets for wall mounting, sometimes they don’t look good with the furniture arrangement, so try the small stoppers first.
And yes, the weight on the bottom row matters. I moved my heavier items up higher.
Good luck! Be prepared to have a bit of patience—it can be a bit of a balancing act sometimes.
