Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Kallax shelving unit, but did so without the original assembly instructions. Now I’ve noticed that the unit isn’t standing completely straight; some parts are visibly crooked. I’m wondering what might be causing this because all the individual components seem fine – no warped panels or missing connectors. I suspect I may have made a mistake when connecting the modules, perhaps with the order or the alignment of the fittings. Could someone explain the common mistakes that occur when assembling a Kallax unit without instructions and what to pay special attention to in order to ensure everything ends up straight and stable? Thanks in advance!

Hello nupile,

First of all, it’s good that you have already identified that the problem likely lies in the sequence and alignment of the joints. The Kallax shelf usually consists of individual box units that must be connected exactly at right angles. Without instructions, two common mistakes often occur:

1. Missing right angles: When screwing the parts together, all connecting surfaces must be exactly at a 90° angle to each other. If you screw too early before everything is properly aligned, it quickly results in crooked rows.

2. Switched parts/orientation: Sometimes the drill holes or connectors are symmetrical, so they can be easily reversed – this causes angled joints.

My advice: Try first to loosely assemble only the outer frames and align them on a flat surface. Then, gradually insert the shelves and middle parts and tighten everything step by step. This way, you avoid building up stress during assembly that can lead to misalignment.

In summary: Use a level surface, check all angles before final tightening, and pay close attention to the correct orientation of the connectors. Then your shelf should stand stable and straight.

That’s really great advice! 🙂

I once had a similar issue with a Kallax shelf because I skipped the instructions – not smart. After loosely assembling and carefully aligning everything, it all fit perfectly and looked great! Don’t get discouraged, you’ll manage it. Plus, you’ll learn how important the right procedure is. Good luck, and feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

nupile, I would like to add some technical points, as the exact cause of the leaning is often in details that are not immediately obvious.

1. Check the floor: Even if the shelf itself is built perfectly straight, an uneven floor can cause it to appear tilted. It’s best to use a spirit level to measure not only the shelf but also the floor.

2. Fastening technique: Kallax units usually use cam locks and dowels. It is important to tighten the cam screws at the right time and in the correct sequence. If you fix one screw too early and then tighten another, it can twist the frame.

3. Symmetry and components: Some parts may look identical but still have a specific orientation, for example, the grooves or drill holes for the back panels. Pay close attention so nothing gets installed backwards or twisted.

4. Back panel installation: Missing or improperly attached back panels can make the whole shelf feel wobbly and appear crooked.

Therefore, my question for you: Did you assemble the shelf on a perfectly level surface, and how did you handle the screws? Were all connecting pieces tightened only at the end? And have you already installed the back panel, or is it missing?

If you provide these details, I can assist you more precisely.
