Good morning everyone,

I have a rather specific problem with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA. After being left in the sun on the balcony for a long time, some of the shelves have become warped, which leads me to ask: How can I smooth out or at least repair these warped shelves without having to replace the entire unit?

The shelves are made of laminate-coated fiberboard, and the warping is probably caused by moisture and heat exposure. I am particularly interested in whether heat or moisture worsens the problem and if there are any proven DIY methods to restore the material’s shape.

I would appreciate any tips – how have you dealt with a similar situation or what would you recommend?

Weight down the shelves on a smooth surface until they are level again. Do not use direct heat.

Hello Curtpra,

I can understand your frustration well; I have experienced the same problem. It is important not to store the panels in direct sunlight or on damp surfaces, as the material will swell.

The idea of weighing them down is correct. If you iron them, be sure to use a damp cloth so that the heat does not act directly on the laminate.

If you are unsure, proceed carefully – too much heat or moisture can make the situation worse.

If the panels are not completely saturated, you can often achieve good results this way. Otherwise, replacement is the only option.

It is best to let them dry slowly and then place them where they are no longer exposed to direct moisture.

Good luck!

That sounds really frustrating with your KALLAX shelf. I know how annoying such damage can be, especially when you want to take good care of your furniture.

If you’re unsure about handling heat, remember: it’s better to take it slow and be cautious than to try too much at once. Wood-based materials can become irreparably damaged very quickly.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the tips here help you get your shelf back to normal use!

Lay the boards flat and weigh them down with heavy books. This usually flattens out the waves.

Exactly, that’s the main point, and I can only confirm it. More stubborn waves caused by moisture generally require additional heat.

This is very important because too much heat can cause the laminate to peel. Proceeding carefully is really the key here.

I also recommend treating the shelves with furniture wax or a similar protective product after they have dried, to increase protection against future moisture.

One more important tip: If you use the shelf outside frequently, consider placing a water-resistant cover over it.

Keep windows tilted open and store surfaces in a well-ventilated area; this helps moisture escape quickly.
