ᐅ My KALLAX shelf has an uneven top surface – how can I level it?

Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA, which I am generally very happy with. However, I noticed that the top surface is not completely flat. Specifically, there are small uneven spots, so decorative items, for example, don’t sit steadily and wobble. I have checked whether the floor where the unit stands is perfectly level, and it is.

My question: How can I level the top surface of the KALLAX shelving unit without negatively affecting its stability or appearance? Does anyone have experience with this or good tips on how to best even out small irregularities on a surface-coated particleboard?

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Hello Gifilo,

I recently leveled my KALLAX as well because the top surface developed slight warping due to humid air.

In my experience, filling is possible, but the surface will look a bit different afterward if it’s not perfectly repainted. If you don’t want to do that, I would also recommend an acrylic sheet (Plexiglas). It is lightweight yet sturdy and can even be cut to length.

If the shelf is still under warranty, filing a complaint with IKEA might also be an option.

Very important: double-check whether the shelf is standing on a very flat floor. Even small unevenness in the feet can affect the top board by slightly twisting the whole unit.

By the way, why did you check if the floor is level? Have you already moved or rearranged the shelf?

I would simply have a thin MDF board cut to the appropriate size and cover it with a matching film if the surface needs to be preserved. Then attach or secure this board as a new smooth surface.

This is the simplest and most cost-effective solution if a complaint is no longer an option.

+1 for that, a clean and quick solution 😉

Also, you can get creative with the board yourself by painting, covering, or decorating it – which adds a personal touch.

Sometimes a bit of DIY is exactly what gives a piece of furniture that special something. And don’t worry, the shelf will remain stable as long as you secure it properly.

Here’s a tip: check home improvement stores often for leftover thin wood panels – you can sometimes find great bargains!
