leomaHello everyone, I have a somewhat specific problem: my KALLAX shelf board (which is the IKEA shelf made of particleboard) was used as a temporary spare parts storage after the last flood at my home. Unfortunately, it is now covered with dirt, water stains, and probably some early signs of mold. Since I can’t replace the board immediately, I’m considering how to best clean and restore it properly. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to professionally clean such a KALLAX board (that is, particleboard with a coating) without damaging the material, removing as much mold as possible, and possibly getting rid of odors? What would you recommend to avoid swelling or damaging the surface? Thanks in advance for your help!
Hey leoma, that doesn’t sound good, but we’ll figure it out somehow! 🙂 I’d say: First, let the board dry thoroughly, preferably in the air and not in direct sunlight, as the coating might warp. After that, you can gently clean it with a mild detergent (e.g., dish soap) and a soft cloth. If mold appears, a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution or some diluted vinegar water often helps – but always test carefully to make sure it doesn’t damage the surface. Then let it dry well again! Don’t let mold sit for too long, or it can become a serious problem. Good luck!

The particleboard is sensitive to moisture, so direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent warping or swelling. For mold removal, studies show that vinegar essence (2%-3%) or a 70% isopropanol solution are effective, as they kill mold without damaging the surface coating, provided the exposure time is limited. After treatment, the board should be thoroughly dried in a well-ventilated area. Dust or coarse dirt should be removed with a dry cloth before applying these substances.
I find it fascinating that you want to restore your KALLAX shelf so cleverly! 😊 🙂 I’ve had similar experiences with water damage. The key is to keep the drying process going; otherwise, unpleasant odors can develop. After that, clean gently and, if necessary, use vinegar or alcohol, but not too strong. You’ve got this!
