nauus68Hello everyone,
I have an Ikea Kallax shelf, and I’ve noticed that after cleaning it with a slightly damp cloth, small spots appear on the surfaces. These look like water marks or unpleasant stains, even though I wipe it dry immediately afterward. My specific question is: Is this normal for Kallax shelves, meaning for the surface material, that spots remain after wet cleaning? Or am I possibly doing something wrong during the cleaning process?
I would like to know if I should be using a special care product or if the material is just that sensitive. I don’t use any harsh cleaners, only lukewarm water with a mild dish soap. Still, the spots appear, especially on the surface that looks laminated or coated.
I look forward to hearing about your experiences and any tips on the proper care of this Kallax material.
Thanks in advance!

After cleaning with moisture, be sure to dry the surface thoroughly and avoid leaving any droplets behind. If the surface is coated, it is sensitive to water stains.
Hello!
Regarding your issue: Kallax shelves are coated with melamine, which is generally quite durable but not completely waterproof. If water spots appear after cleaning with moisture, it usually means that the moisture was not fully removed, and after drying, residues or slight deposits become visible.
Here are a few tips:
1. Clean the shelf with a well-wrung cloth that is only slightly damp.
2. Immediately follow up by wiping with a dry, soft cloth to remove any remaining moisture.
3. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or abrasive sponges. Mild dish soap works well.
4. Be careful with hard water: sometimes lime scale residues can cause spots. Use filtered water if possible.
If you follow these points, no unsightly spots should appear. Melamine is not completely water-resistant, but the coating only protects against moisture for a short time. If liquid remains on the surface for longer, stains or discoloration may occur.
I hope these tips help you! 🙂

Hello nauus68,
I would like to add to your experience, as I also have a Kallax shelf and clean it regularly. The key points for cleaning and maintenance are:
1. Cloth choice: It is best to use a microfiber cloth or a soft cotton cloth. Regular sponges or rough cloths can cause small scratches, which then promote stains.
2. Moisture level: As mentioned, the cloth should only be slightly damp. Too much water can penetrate the joints or edges and cause issues.
3. Dry wiping: Very important! Everything must be completely dry immediately after wiping.
4. Removing stains: If stubborn water stains have already formed, I recommend a mixture of 50% water and 50% white vinegar as a gentle cleaner. Important: wipe dry right after, otherwise it will get worse.
5. Prevention: In general, avoid treating the shelf with too much liquid. Occasionally, you can also use a furniture care cloth that contains a small amount of wax and additionally protects the surface.
A common mistake is that many people unintentionally clean the shelf too wet or do not dry it properly. The material is melamine-coated, so it is durable but not waterproof. Stains are therefore more a reaction to moisture and possibly lime deposits.
If you follow these points, you should not have any problems in the long run. If you have any further questions, I am happy to help!

Is it normal for Kallax shelves, meaning the surface of this material, to leave stains after cleaning with moisture?Well, whether it is normal depends on your expectations. Kallax is not a high-end piece of furniture but an affordable shelf with a simple melamine surface. Water stains can appear if you clean it with too much moisture.
My theory is that these stains are a quiet admission that the low price is reflected in the material and impregnation quality.
Still, there are several ways to avoid this, as mentioned in previous posts. However, you shouldn’t expect this shelf to behave like solid wood furniture or lacquered furniture.
If you regularly wipe the shelf while it is still wet, it is likely that the surface will eventually deteriorate, potentially swelling or discoloring. So, my advice is to clean it carefully and dry – not because stains are normal, but to maintain its condition as well as possible.
