ᐅ My Kallax shelf by the window is turning yellow – should I use UV protection?

Martyn2Hello everyone,
I have the following issue: My Kallax shelving unit is placed right next to the window, which I actually like because of the natural light. However, I have noticed for some time now that the white Kallax panels are gradually turning yellow, which is likely due to UV exposure. The yellowing bothers me visually, and I am wondering if it would be useful to apply UV protection, such as special films or coatings, to protect the material and prevent discoloration.
Does anyone here have experience with UV protection for IKEA furniture or wooden furniture near windows in general? I am open to advice, including alternatives or other protective measures.
Thanks in advance!

UV rays cause chemical changes in plastic or paint materials, leading to yellowing. Window films with UV blockers can filter out up to 99% of harmful radiation.
A coating with UV protection is possible, but depending on whether the Kallax finishes are compatible, issues may arise. For example, the surface might change in appearance or texture. From my experience, window protection film is the best option, as it addresses the problem at the source and does not require any additional treatment of the furniture.

I think the idea of using UV protection film is pretty smart – it not only helps protect your Kallax, but also provides some shielding for the whole room against strong sunlight. Plus, these films come in different tints if you’d like a slightly shaded view.
If you don’t want to apply film on the window, you can also use special furniture lacquers, but depending on the furniture surface, that can be quite tricky. For the Kallax, which is actually melamine coated, it could be difficult because lacquers don’t always stick well or may change the appearance.
So: film = practical & effective, lacquer = effort with no guarantee.
Good luck, and if you go with the film option, let us know how it works out! 🙂
