ᐅ After cleaning, my KALLAX shelf developed spots—how can I remove them?

KolisHello everyone,
I have an IKEA KALLAX shelf that, after a thorough cleaning, has suddenly become prone to spots – I mean that after wiping, several unpleasant water spots and streaks appeared on the surface that weren’t there before.
I cleaned the shelf with a slightly damp microfiber cloth and then wiped it again with a dry cloth, as recommended. Still, these spots remain visible, which affects the overall appearance quite a bit.
Does anyone have experience with this issue? Are there specific cleaning products or techniques that can help make the shelf look uniform and spot-free again without damaging the surface? I prefer to avoid aggressive cleaners since the shelf is made of coated particleboard.
Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello Kolis,
I completely understand your issue. Such water stains often occur due to mineral deposits left behind on the surface after the water evaporates. This can be especially noticeable on slightly glossy or coated surfaces.
It’s important that you do not use aggressive cleaners like solvents or abrasives, as these can damage the surface. Often, simply wiping the spots with a microfiber cloth dampened with warm water and then immediately drying with a lint-free, dry cloth to avoid any remaining moisture is enough.
Sometimes, a small amount of vinegar in the water can help dissolve mineral deposits – for example, 1 part vinegar to 10 parts water. However, please test this first in an inconspicuous area to make sure the coating does not dull or discolor.
If the stains are stubborn, a special furniture care marker for coated surfaces might also help.
I hope this helps you! 🙂

If that doesn’t work: try a little vinegar water, but use sparingly!
Hello Kolis,
I would like to add a few details that might help to understand the issue more deeply and address it more effectively.
The KALLAX shelving unit is made of melamine-coated particleboard. This surface is generally quite durable but can be sensitive to certain cleaning methods and products. The "stains" could be not only water marks but also residues from cleaning agents or deposits from the water itself.
My advice: use distilled water for cleaning, as it contains no minerals that can cause such marks.
Also, avoid using too much water on the shelving. Instead of wiping with a wet cloth, use a slightly damp microfiber cloth and immediately dry the surface afterward.
If the stains have already set in, you can try gently treating them with a damp cloth and a mild, pH-neutral dish soap—rinse thoroughly and dry carefully! It is important never to leave moisture standing for a long time.
Furthermore, how is the lighting in your space? Sometimes stains are only visible under certain angles or when sunlight highlights them.
What kind of cloths are you using exactly? Some microfiber cloths vary significantly in surface texture, which can affect the cleaning results.
And lastly, how old is the shelving unit? The condition of the coating can promote staining due to age and wear.
If you like, feel free to share more about your cleaning routine—that will help to provide more targeted advice.

To solve the problem, it is important to know exactly how the stains look – are they matte water stains, shiny streaks, or discolored spots?
If the stains are matte, a furniture polish designed specifically for plastic or melamine-coated furniture can help by slightly "refreshing" the surface.
For shiny water stains, dry polishing with a clean, dry cotton cloth often helps to even out the surface.
Another option is using "furniture oil" or special care creams for melamine panels to smooth out unevenness.
However, be careful to test the product on an inconspicuous area first to avoid any color changes.

Hi,
I had a similar issue with my KALLAX – quite annoying! 😅 For me, adding a small drop of dish soap to the water, wiping carefully, and then drying thoroughly with a terry cloth towel worked wonders.
It’s important not to use it as a spray mist but to clean with the surface properly wetted and let it dry completely before placing anything back on it.
Oh, and don’t use cleaning cloths that shed lint – they cause more problems than they solve.
This method worked for me. Hopefully, it helps you too! 🙂
