Hello everyone,

I have the following problem with my Kallax shelf, which I use in the hallway as a shoe rack: placing and removing shoes repeatedly causes dents and pressure marks on the surface and the shelves. The unit is made of MDF with a melamine coating, so the surface seems more vulnerable to this kind of damage.

My question: Does anyone have experience or ideas on how to prevent or at least minimize these dents? I want to use the shelf functionally, but the cosmetic damage really bothers me.

Are there any special protective pads, liners, or other solutions that shield the direct contact between the shoes and the shelf without taking up too much space?

I’m grateful for any tips, including mechanical or DIY solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

due to frequent contact with shoes, furniture made with MDF boards can easily develop dents because the surface is sensitive. A practical solution is to use thin rubber or felt pads placed on each shelf. They distribute the weight more evenly and prevent pressure marks.

Also, I would check whether dirt or small stones stuck in the shoe soles might be causing damage more often – cleaning the soles before placing the shoes can work wonders.

If you want to continue using the shelf as a shoe rack, such a protective layer is almost indispensable.

Try attaching thin felt pads to the shelves. Alternatively, non-slip plastic mats that can be cut to size also work well.

Hello Ongau53,

Your issue with dents in Kallax shelves is actually quite common, as MDF and melamine surfaces are not very resistant to pressure. Here is a suggestion on how to systematically approach this:

1. Preparation: Clean all the shelves thoroughly to ensure no dirt scratches the protective film or mat, or further damages the surface.
2. Protective layer: Get a cut-to-size piece of furniture felt, cork, or thin rubber (about 3 mm thick) (approximately 1/8 inch). Cork is particularly elastic under pressure.
3. Cutting: Trim the protective pads so they fit the shelves exactly.
4. Attachment: Either place them loose or fix them with double-sided tape.
5. Clean shoe soles: Small stones in shoe soles are often the main cause of dents. Regularly cleaning the soles prevents foreign objects from exerting point pressure on the surface.

Summary: The combination of a soft protective mat and clean soles significantly minimizes damage.

A small potential issue is if the protective pads are too thick – this can affect stability or reduce storage space.

Cork is especially compressible under pressure.

This is an important tip because cork provides both good pressure distribution and sufficient stability. I would also add that cork boards are often available very cheaply at craft stores or hardware stores and can be cut to size individually. This makes them a perfect fit for the shelf.

Oh dear, dents in Kallax units are really annoying – but hey, first world problems, right? 😉

I would try using small cork coasters, cut into squares and placed where the shoes cause the most pressure marks. They also look quite stylish, add a bit of flair to the hallway, and protect your treasure!

Alternatively, you could look for transparent foam rubber mats, which are flexible and really practical for shoes.

Good luck, and don’t lose the joy of your shoes!
