ᐅ My shelving unit has become greasy after being stored in the storage room for weeks – what can I do?

Hello everyone,
I have a question that I've been stuck on for a few weeks and hope someone with experience can help. My Kallax shelf was stored in my storage room, which unfortunately isn’t always well ventilated, and after a few weeks the shelf has become completely greasy – the surfaces feel kind of oily, sticky, and slightly dirty, which is really unpleasant, even though it was basically unused.
I suspect it’s due to the humidity and maybe also dust, but I don’t want to ruin the shelf with just any cleaning product or damage the surface.
Has anyone dealt with greasy surfaces on Kallax shelves? What exactly can I do to clean the shelf without damaging it, and how can I prevent this from happening again in the future?
Thanks in advance!

In addition to the tips already mentioned, I want to emphasize how important the storage conditions are. If the shelf is stored in an unheated room with high humidity, not only dust but also an organic film can develop on the surfaces.
I would recommend wiping the shelf with a slightly anti-static cloth once it has been cleaned. This helps reduce the attraction of dust and grease particles. Also, if possible, avoid continuous recirculated air and instead use direct ventilation to quickly balance the humidity.
If the shelf is stored for a long time, furniture glides under the feet might also help prevent moisture absorption from the floor.
What exactly is your storage area like, Sar_su49? Do you have heating, or is it more like a basement?
