ᐅ My shelving unit got stained after the dog visited – how can I clean it?

lereoHello everyone,
I have a problem where I could use your help: After a visit from our dog, some spots suddenly appeared on my Kallax shelf. The shelf is made of white laminate, and I suspect these are dirt and moisture stains, possibly caused by slightly dried saliva or paw prints.
I have already tried wiping the stains with a damp cloth, but that wasn’t enough; the spots are still clearly visible and make the shelf look unattractive. I definitely don’t want to damage the material, so I would prefer not to use strong solvents. Are there any home remedies or cleaning tips that work well on laminate-like surfaces without damaging the finish?
Have you had any experience removing stains from Kallax shelves after pet visits? I would be very grateful for any ideas, tips, or tricks!
Thanks in advance 🙂

Hey lereo,
Oh, I know that! My dog has also left small spots on our Kallax before – but don’t be discouraged, those spots are usually pretty easy to remove! 🙂
My tip: Mix a mild dish soap with warm water and use a soft cloth. It’s important not to use too much water to avoid swelling the laminate. Then wipe again with a dry cloth to prevent water stains.
If the spots are stubborn, you can try adding a little diluted vinegar to the water – this often works wonders on organic stains. Don’t worry, it won’t damage the Kallax laminate if you wipe it well and dry it afterward!
It’s great that everything can be cleaned up nicely. Let me know how it goes for you!
Good luck and best regards! :-)

I understand your wish to remove the stains thoroughly without damaging the material. Kallax is actually made of MDF boards with a melamine coating (laminate), which is durable but can be sensitive to harsh cleaning agents.
I recommend the following approach:
1. Remove dust: First, wipe the surface with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to avoid scratching the surface with any dirt particles.
2. Gentle cleaning: Prepare a cleaning solution with lukewarm water and a few drops of pH-neutral dish soap. Gently rub the stains with a well-wrung cloth.
3. Vinegar solution for stubborn stains: If the stains are organic (e.g. saliva), dilute vinegar with water at a ratio of 1:5 and apply it sparingly to the spots. Vinegar has antibacterial properties and dissolves dirt, but be careful—always apply it with a cloth and avoid prolonged contact.
4. Mechanical help: For very stubborn stains, you can gently use the soft side of a sponge, but never scrub.
5. Drying: Always finish by wiping with a dry, lint-free cloth and allow to dry thoroughly.
As an addition: Have you noticed if the stains appear greasy or rather like water marks? This helps to assess the situation further.
Feel free to get back if you have more details or are unsure. The exact composition and condition of the stains can influence the best method.
Good luck!

Do not use too much water, as laminate can swell. This method works quite well for Kallax.
