Hello everyone,

I have a slightly annoying problem with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA: individual inserts, those small boxes or compartments where I place or store items, keep losing their grip and either fall out or shift. This doesn’t just happen occasionally but regularly, and I’m not sure what exactly causes it.

My KALLAX is stable, but I suspect it might be due to incorrect positioning of the inserts or possibly wear on the supports or surfaces where the inserts rest. Has anyone experienced something similar or can offer advice on how to secure the inserts permanently without having to readjust them all the time?

I would appreciate any tips, including special tricks or alternative solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hello Gufigla,

I’m quite familiar with this problem, especially when the shelf isn’t perfectly level or the inserts don’t fit precisely. The KALLAX units are sturdy, but the inserts themselves are often only “loosely held” or can easily shift.

I recommend first making sure your KALLAX is truly level. Sometimes attaching small felt pads or furniture wedges under the unit helps to compensate for uneven floors.

To secure the inserts, you can also apply small double-sided adhesive pads or self-adhesive rubber strips on the contact surfaces. This reduces slipping and keeps the inserts firmly in place.

If you haven’t tried this yet: some users swear by gently roughening the contact surfaces of the inserts with very fine sandpaper. This increases friction, especially when the inserts are made of smooth plastic.

Feel free to get in touch if you need more details or want to share how it’s working for you!

It’s kind of funny that people have to use such makeshift fixes with IKEA shelves – a shelf should really hold together without needing to be "modified."

I think the problem runs deeper: KALLAX and similar shelving units are simply not designed to withstand heavy or continuous load with small inserts. These boxes are more of an accessory than part of the load-bearing structure.

If inserts keep falling out, it could also be that the shelf is being used incorrectly or overloaded. Maybe it’s better to switch to more sturdy solutions or replace the inserts with metal versions? IKEA itself offers suitable combination items for some models that grip better.

In short: sometimes the product just isn’t intended for the heavy use you expect. Just my two cents.

Hello Gufigla,

I would like to take a closer look at your issue to better narrow down the cause. The most common reason for KALLAX inserts slipping is a combination of material properties, installation, and loading.

1. Material and Fit:
KALLAX shelves are made of wood-based panels that can slightly give over time, especially when exposed to moisture. This can cause the support surfaces of the inserts to no longer fit precisely, or the wood may swell slightly, which creates some play.

2. Insert Types:
There are different types of KALLAX inserts: fixed and flexible ones, such as those made of plastic or fabric boxes. Plastic boxes usually have built-in support edges that rest on a narrow strip. If these are not perfectly aligned, the box can slip.

3. Installation:
Even small inaccuracies when placing the inserts can cause slipping later on. Check if the shelf levels are truly square both diagonally and horizontally (use a spirit level!).

4. Loading:
If you frequently store heavy items in or on the inserts, the risk of slipping increases, especially if the fit is slightly compromised.

My advice:
- Self-adhesive felt pads or rubber pads on the support surfaces of the inserts can significantly increase friction.
- Check the shelf for slight twisting and tighten any shelf screws if needed.
- Use a spirit level and adjust as necessary.
- If the shelf is located in a room with high humidity, try temporarily moving it elsewhere to rule out expansion.

Could you perhaps specify which type of insert you are using exactly and how often the inserts are changed or loaded? That would help estimate the cause better.

I hope this information helps you!
