Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Ikea Kallax shelf, which now feels quite dull and rough after cleaning it with a common bleach-based cleaner. Previously, the surface was smooth and glossy, but now it seems like there are fine scratches or a matte layer on it that makes the wood veneer look unattractive.

I know that bleach cleaners can be quite harsh, but I only wiped the shelf superficially and did not soak it or anything like that. Does anyone have experience with restoring this dull, slightly rough surface back to its original condition? Are there suitable products or home remedies I could try without making the effect worse?

I would really appreciate your tips and advice – thank you very much!

Hey Meferenc,

that sounds really frustrating with the dull Kallax, but I have a little trick for you that many people don’t consider:

You can try gently wiping the rough, dull surface with a mix of vinegar and water (1:3) – this sometimes helps because vinegar removes residues from harsh cleaners. Afterwards, make sure to wipe it well with clean water!

gently go over the surface with very fine abrasive pads (e.g. Scotch-Brite, very fine) using light pressure

This is also super important. If you have something like that, great; if not, take it a bit more carefully.

And hey, if you have some furniture wax: just apply a thin, light layer and work it in thoroughly with a soft cloth, then the shine will come back. 🙂

Keep at it; with a bit of patience, it will definitely improve!

Hello Meferenc,

A brief note about my experience with Kallax shelves and their maintenance:

These melamine-coated surfaces are very sensitive to harsh cleaning agents, especially chlorine-based cleaners. Unfortunately, the protective layer is often damaged, which causes a dull effect.

Here is my approach when that happens:

1. Gently clean with lukewarm water and a soft cloth, avoiding microfiber cloths with rough textures.
2. If the shelf surface feels slightly roughened, it is usually difficult to fully restore it, as the coating is actually damaged.
3. For a bit more shine, furniture polish suitable for plastic surfaces can help (e.g., special polish for plastic furniture).
4. More drastic measures like light sanding are generally only reasonable if you plan to repaint afterward – this is costly and unnecessary for normal use with IKEA furniture.

Only sand if that has no effect and you dare to test a small spot first.

I fully agree — really test small areas first!

I hope you find a solution. Good luck!
