Hello everyone, I recently assembled an IKEA Platsa shelving unit, which is supposed to be very practical and versatile. However, I noticed that the unit has some noticeable play in several areas, so it doesn’t feel completely stable and feels a bit wobbly, especially when I place lighter items on it or move it slightly. The connections between the individual modules are properly installed, all screws are tight, yet this uncomfortable looseness remains.
Does anyone have experience with how to best fix the play in the Platsa shelving system? Are there any tips for readjustment, or should I consider replacing the connectors? I want to avoid the unit being damaged over time due to too much movement.
This mainly concerns the larger modules that are stacked on top of each other. Also, I’d be interested in any methods to improve stability without compromising the design. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Important points:
- Completely bevel and correctly install the connecting elements to prevent any slight movement.
- Ensure that any back panels are firmly secured and, if possible, do not loosen at the corners.
- If the wall or floor is not perfectly level, appropriate adjustments should be made (shims, wedges).
In very rare cases, the quality of the modules may be the issue; in such cases, replacing individual components is the solution.

Hello Noomi36,
I can fully understand your detailed issue with the play in the PLATSA shelving unit. The modular system relies on precise assembly and suitable surfaces.
Here is what I would recommend:
- Carefully separate all the modules and check the alignment of the dowels and screws. Sometimes a connection is slightly misaligned, which causes the play.
- If needed, use good wood glue on dowel joints and let it dry thoroughly; this will make the connection more stable.
- Check the flatness of the floor and adjust with furniture pads or felt gliders, since minor unevenness can quickly cause play.
- If the back panels are already slightly warped or not firmly in place, you should reposition or reinforce them.
It is important to approach each step carefully and patiently. The piece of furniture interacts with you and sometimes needs a little fine-tuning. Good luck!

Yeah, I had the same issue, and what really helped me was reinforcing the joints with a few extra angle brackets from the inside! It gives the shelf some extra stability. Thanks for the tip, that sounds like a practical solution since I have the shelf placed in a corner and would prefer not to have visible brackets on the outside.
Does anyone have experience with which angle brackets are good quality so they don’t loosen or rust after a short time? Ideally something durable, as I don’t have much time for adjustments.

Does anyone have experience with which angle brackets with screws are of good quality so that they do not become loose again or rust after a short time? My advice: choose galvanized angle brackets with screws, as they are generally quite resistant to rust and maintain their hold well even after repeated stress.
Additionally, I always apply some thread-locking fluid to the screws, which helps prevent them from loosening. This makes a big difference, especially in corners subjected to a lot of lateral force.

Jokes aside, keep at it and don’t hesitate to use small helpers like washers, brackets, or even self-adhesive felt pads. They work wonders!
