ᐅ My IKEA Platsa shelving unit is tipping over – do you have any solutions?

lejonteHello everyone,
I have a problem with my IKEA Platsa shelving unit that I assembled just a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, the unit tends to tip forward slightly, even though I have anchored it to the wall. It consists of several modules combined (width 180cm (71 inches), height 192cm (76 inches)) that should be stable according to the instructions. The anchoring is in place, but the top section sometimes wobbles, especially when I open a door or place heavier items on top.
I’m wondering if I’m overlooking something—such as missing special brackets, additional fasteners, or other tips to make the shelving more secure and stable? Has anyone experienced something similar or found solutions?
I look forward to any helpful advice!

It sounds like the stability of the unit might not be fully guaranteed by the wall mounting alone. Especially with tall modules like the Platsa shelf unit, which is 192 cm (76 inches) high, it is important that the included wall brackets are installed correctly and anchored into solid spots.
Additionally, I recommend connecting the individual modules to each other. IKEA usually provides cross connectors or metal plates for this purpose, which hold the modules together as one unit. Without these connections, there can be a tipping moment, especially if one side is loaded.
Also, check whether the floor is truly level. Unevenness can cause the shelf to tip, even if everything is properly fixed. If that is the case, you can use small leveling wedges.
In short – wall mounting, module connectors, and checking the floor are the key points.

Hello,
I would like to add something because the issue of furniture tipping, especially with shelving systems like Platsa, occurs frequently and often has similar causes.
1. Wall anchoring: Make sure you use the correct wall plugs. Drywall requires different anchors than concrete or brick. The fastenings must be secure. Check the screws regularly, as they can loosen over time.
2. Module connectors: Many people underestimate their importance, but they are crucial because they turn multiple units into a stable whole. If you did not use these, the tipping stability will be reduced.
3. Load distribution: Always place heavy items towards the bottom of the shelf to keep the center of gravity low.
4. Actual tipping or wobbling: If the shelf wobbles, it could be due to slight play in the connections. This can be compensated for with small wooden wedges or felt pads.
5. Optional accessories: Some recommend using additional brackets or metal plates from a hardware store to reinforce the unit if the supplied parts are insufficient.
If you like, I can also put together a small checklist for you.

Always place heavy items on the lower shelves to keep the center of gravity low. That’s an important point, thank you. In fact, I had packed the upper shelves quite full—probably raising the center of gravity too much.nubar schrieb:
Also, check if the floor is really level. Unevenness can cause the shelf to tip over, even if everything is properly secured. The floor is indeed slightly sloped; I hadn’t considered that yet. What materials or methods would be best to compensate for the unevenness without it being noticeable? Also, I checked: I did connect the modules, but the connection screws were not fully tightened. I will check that again tonight and tighten them if necessary.
Thanks to all of you for the great tips! Which types of wall anchors are best suited for a drywall partition? The Platsa manual was not very clear on that.
