ᐅ Does the balcony above a bay window need to have a supporting frame?

Dear friends,

I’m uploading the picture shortly. We are building a Reineck house and have a balcony above the bay window. We don’t understand why the frame is so wide. To step onto the balcony, we have to take a wide step every time. When I asked the site manager (who can justify all the architect’s planning errors with regulations and DIN standards), this was the answer:

This upstand at the balcony door on the upper floor is correctly installed. As shown in the construction plans, a parapet of 25cm (10 inches) was specified here. This is necessary to properly seal the balcony on the exterior in accordance with DIN 18531 (flat roof guidelines).

Is this really necessary?

I’m looking forward to your answers.

Exactly like that. What we call a “door” is basically just a deep-set window. The opening in the exterior wall inevitably results in a windowsill. I’m not sure how low this can be made, but a regular door can never be installed here.

Exactly, I remember very clearly and I didn’t understand you back then. So I asked the architect. She said that many others are mistaken. I assumed it would be just one height but not with a board in front like that.
Is there really nothing that can be done about it?

You were warned about this twice back then,

About a 15 cm (6 inches) step to access the balcony results from the height of the parapet, which is given from the raw floor level. The parapet height is 25 cm (10 inches), minus about 15 cm (6 inches) for the floor buildup plus about 5 cm (2 inches) for the sill of a standard window = a 15 cm (6 inches) step.

The plan shows a parapet height of 25 cm (10 inches). What does the parapet height refer to? Raw construction measurement or top of finished floor? If it is the top of finished floor, then there is even a 25 cm (10 inches) step. This is because the floor buildup of a roof terrace is higher than the floor buildup inside the house.

and the question to the architect was clearly formulated accordingly: "What does this parapet height refer to?" (possibly supplemented by "and is there anything additional?"), so the answer "wrong" would not have been an option. Actually, I should have linked you to a comparable situation of @R.Hotzenplotz back then ;-)
Instead, I am linking you now to https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/grundrissplanung-kurz-vor-bauantragsstellung.25647/page-148#post-270181, and in several posts from last year—mostly in threads by @Pinkiponk—you can also find explanations about the term "low threshold" by using the forum search.

Exactly like that, it is absolutely current, and the standard threshold is the most common variant. However, I personally consider the low threshold option to be compliant with the standards (personal opinion without guarantee!).
