Hello everyone,
Did any of you (as musicians) plan something specific for your new build, or have your ideas about a "fully insulated and climate-controlled rehearsal room" remained just daydreams?
I play piano and guitar myself. The piano has already found a place in the living room. The guitar was mostly used in the band area (metal music). I’m starting to feel the urge to set something up again, especially since there’s a PA system lying around and the chance for a warm and dry room exists. However, I’m worried that without serious soundproofing (we only have the attic as an option, no basement), this might lead to conflicts over noise and eventually turn into a storage room.
What are your thoughts, what have you actually implemented, and what experiences do you have?

I think it has become clear that the topic is soundproofing a rehearsal room.Where has that become clear? I’m not sure if this is about a hobby musician who occasionally makes noise and wants to avoid bothering the neighbors, or if there’s family conflict about it. Or if I’m dealing with someone who wants to rehearse regularly with a band on a semi-professional level.
I don’t believe it’s a professional musician because "I’m already itching to get back to doing something" implies to me that they haven’t been active lately—which rules out a pro, in my opinion.
Therefore, some clarification would be helpful:
- Is the goal only to protect the neighbors from too much metal music noise?
- Does the family find the musical ambitions of the original poster (OP) on the guitar unbearable and want to avoid hearing it at all (which might not work with a piano in the living room)?
- Or is the aim to create a truly soundproofed room where one can practice loudly anytime and as much as desired?
If the latter, it should also be specified whether the practice is always solo (there are sound booths starting at around $2,500 USD, but they fit only one person) or if band rehearsals are planned. Especially for metal music, if the rest of the house shouldn’t hear much, this becomes a significant project.

What thoughts did you have and what have you actually done or what are your experiences? We did not include rehearsal rooms for the various bands and ensembles inside the house. If it gets late, amplified instruments are played through headphones (bass, guitars, digital piano, drums to a limited extent). During the day, everything can be played normally. We play all music genres, but mostly jazz, pop, and funk.
