Hello everyone,

we are buying a 4-room apartment from the developer. The building has not been constructed yet. The construction description states that the living room and each bedroom will have an "antenna socket / multimedia socket for radio and TV." There is a TAE telephone socket in the hallway. To me, this sounds a bit basic. What do you think? Is it possible to connect a telephone to these "multimedia sockets"? Can the router and all the equipment from the network provider (e.g., a cable company) be connected to each of these sockets?

Thanks for your input and best regards

Hello.

In cable networks, what are commonly called “antenna outlets / multimedia outlets” are the sockets for radio, television, and cable modem (for internet). However, I would be surprised if every room is fully equipped with all three connections. If so, that’s great. You can then connect all devices everywhere. Usually, though, only TV connections are installed at the television locations, and only one room has the full setup for the modem.

You only need the TAE socket if you get “telephone internet” classically from TeleAlice1und1.

You probably cannot connect a telephone directly to the multimedia outlets. You can connect it classically to the TAE socket, but only if you do not have a contract with a cable provider. With a cable provider, the telephone must be connected to the modem/router provided by the cable company.

Depending on your provider, you may receive SIP credentials (login data for telephony), which allows you to connect a SIP-enabled phone to any LAN port.

In general, I consider it irrelevant where the telephone base station is located in a 4-room apartment. DECT coverage typically reaches the whole apartment. The same applies for the (cable) modem: as long as the network is available in all rooms, I personally would even prefer the modem connection to be located in the storage room (or otherwise hidden)…

Hello and thank you very much for your reply!
To make sure I understand correctly: You probably mean the outlet with the round antenna cables arranged in a triangle, right? Not a network outlet with RJ45, correct?

In the first case, I still don’t really understand how I could do it: I can connect the cable provider’s Fritzbox to one of the 5 outlets and then only set up Wi-Fi, right? I would then have to lay the network cables myself.

Sorry, as you can tell, I don’t have much knowledge about this topic. 🙂

In my opinion, these multimedia outlets are completely outdated. Much more important are LAN outlets in every single room. In our new build, we didn’t even have a cable connection installed in the house anymore, as we haven’t used traditional TV for years.

Most likely just like that, but the only way to be sure is to ask the builder. Make sure to get a quote for LAN wiring suitable for Gigabit Ethernet (or specify CAT7 cables and Gigabit Ethernet outlets)!

That's how I understand it. If there is also Ethernet LAN installed in the sockets, that's ideal. But that definitely needs to be confirmed...

In any case, I would make sure there is a double Ethernet outlet in every room. That can be easily arranged in new construction.
