Hello,

I finally want to mount my BESTÅ TV combination this weekend. However, I have a few questions. Since I have laminate skirting boards on the floor and a lot of cables need to run behind them, I need plenty of space (about 6 cm (2.5 inches)) behind – there’s simply no way around it. I have now bought some construction battens from the hardware store and have already fixed one at the end of the panels with two screws and wall anchors into the masonry wall behind. The panel fixings now sit perfectly against the wood:

I’m now wondering the following:

How should I secure the panels and shelves above so that everything is as stable as possible? I see the following options:

1) I simply fix everything directly to the construction battens. That way, I avoid making extra holes in the wall, I don’t need to buy additional drill bits (which need to be about 10 cm (4 inches) deep anyway to go into the wall!), and everything is easier to handle. The wood is also quite thick at 6 cm (2.5 inches).

However, I’m not sure whether this will be really stable. The wooden battens are four pieces of about 1.5 m (5 feet) each, currently planned with one screw and anchor on the left and right into the masonry wall. After all, all the weight will be hanging on these battens, which are only attached with screws. I have no idea if this might result in less stability overall, because it’s basically screws connected to screws.

2) I first fix the battens, mark the holes, then drill through the wood batten and the masonry wall (first with a wood drill bit, then with a masonry drill bit), try to push the wall anchor through into the masonry (removing the battens again would be too much effort), and then use an 8–9 cm (3–3.5 inch) screw that is anchored into the masonry wall plug.

This method definitely requires more effort to install, I’m unsure whether the wall plugs will hold properly like this, and I don’t know if such a long screw will provide better stability in the end.

How would you proceed here, and what has been your experience regarding these stability considerations?

Thank you very much for your help!

I would do it according to 1) using 3 screws over 1.5 m (5 feet) and at least 8 mm (0.3 inches) wall plugs.
