Hello everyone,

I am planning to install the Ikea Metod system with baseboards directly over an underfloor heating system in my kitchen. I have a few questions regarding safe and proper installation, especially since the baseboards will be in contact with the usually sensitive underfloor heating.

- How can I prevent the baseboards from being damaged by heat or moisture?
- Are there specific fastening methods or spacing requirements I should follow?
- Do I need to use special materials (e.g., seals, adhesives, profiles) to accommodate expansion and thermal movement?
- How can I achieve a clean and even appearance without negatively affecting the heating performance?

I would be very grateful for any practical experience, tips, or expert advice. Thank you in advance!

The gap actually makes cleaning easier. Vacuum cleaner nozzles usually fit well underneath.

Clip systems generally allow for easy removal of the baseboards for cleaning when necessary.

Cleaning under baseboards with a gap is straightforward. Simply vacuum or wipe underneath regularly with a damp cloth.

What is your opinion on cleaning the baseboards with this gap?

From my experience with underfloor heating and baseboards, a gap of 8–10 mm (0.3–0.4 inches) is optimal, not only for heat distribution but also for cleaning. Dust does accumulate, but it can be easily removed with a vacuum cleaner or brush.

Removing the baseboards is usually quite simple thanks to clip systems, without causing damage. Especially if you use flexible fastenings, you should regularly check that everything is still securely in place, particularly after heating periods when the wood may expand slightly.

It’s also worth noting that for consistent protection and a clean appearance, a thin rubber seal or soft backing tape can prevent dust and small debris from getting trapped between the floor and the baseboard.

Baseboards with a gap of 8-10 mm (0.3-0.4 inches) are practical and do not obstruct heating.

Regular cleaning underneath the baseboards is recommended, as dust tends to accumulate there easily.

Thank you for the valuable tips! Flexibility, regular cleaning, and spacing are now clear.

One last question: If I need to shorten the baseboards for recesses (e.g., around pipes or doorways), how can I avoid splintering or rough cut edges? What tool or method would be best for Metod strips?

For clean cuts on Metod baseboards, especially those coated with MDF, I recommend:

- Use a fine-toothed hand saw or a jigsaw with a fine blade (e.g., for laminate or MDF).
- Secure the baseboard firmly to prevent vibration or splintering.
- Cut slowly and apply steady pressure to avoid chipping.
- After cutting, lightly sand any slightly splintered edges with sandpaper (grit 180-220) to smooth them.

Alternatively, specialized miter saws with finer blades are ideal for angled cuts and precise work.

Important: Test on an inconspicuous area before the final cut to get familiar with the material and tool.
