We are currently planning the placement of a motion sensor for our new build. The house is 11m (36 feet) wide and is located 3m (10 feet) from the street. Outdoor lights on both sides of the front door, which is centered on the house, should be activated by the motion sensor. The detection area should cover only the 3m by 11m (10 feet by 36 feet) space in front of the house, as I do not want the lights to turn on every time a car drives by. Where should the motion sensor be installed? Centered above the door on the exterior wall, or under the eaves? What type of motion sensor would be suitable?
Hi, I have now installed both the Gira Tectiv 220 and the Busch Jäger 220 Masterline. With both motion detectors, I cannot achieve a detection range of 3 m (10 feet) in front and 5 m (16 feet) to the sides. The light always turns on when people walk past the house. The angle was set completely downward, and the upper area was covered, but the range is still too large. The mounting height is 2.5 m (8 feet). Is there no suitable motion detector for my application above the front door with a range of 3 m (10 feet) to the street?

Sebastian7917 Feb 2016 10:15I have the Gira Comfort Automatic Switch 2 for the garage and front door. The front door is not installed yet, but the garage works perfectly with the detection range you mentioned.
Previously, I had a standard automatic switch from Gira, which was triggered by every pedestrian and car...
I deliberately didn’t choose the Tectiv because I found it unattractive, and the automatic switch offers more features (including with the dimmer insert).

Is there no suitable motion detector for my application above the front door with a 3m (10 feet) range to the street? That’s a puzzle to me. My house wall is exactly 3.01m (10 feet) from the street. So the Gira sensor is about 2.5m (8 feet) from the street. The detection area can be set very precisely on my unit. It even allows reducing detection inward (the light only turns on when standing further inside the entrance). I have set it to street boundary. For your purpose, the Tectiv should work. My advice is to contact Gira again.

Thorsten
Hi,
Regarding the slope. This aspect was actually only implied in my previous posts. Sorry about that, I’m still learning—I should have made it clearer.
The roof has a slope of 38 degrees, including the roof overhang, which is essentially a partial extension of the roof.
Therefore, the Tectiv is tilted 38 degrees inward toward the front door.
The installation was in September 2014; I don’t remember every detail. However, I believe one or two additional mounting bases were included in the box for installation with an angle bracket or partial compensation. But perhaps these are no longer included today (or Gira sells such parts as replacements/accessories).
Best regards,
Thorsten

yes. I installed the device below the roof overhang (we have a downward-angled roof overhang near the front door as rain protection) close to the gutter and basically slightly to the right of the front door. Just measured: height is almost exactly 3 m (10 feet).

Hello, in our case the roof overhang is at a right angle to the wall (eaves box). The problem with motion detectors in my situation is always the excessively long frontal detection range. Without adjusting the angle or masking detection zones, it is difficult to keep the frontal range below 3m (10 feet). That’s why I have high hopes for the Steinel SensIQS, which can mechanically tilt the sensors internally.
